What work would I do? As a Pipelayer in the City of Newport News Public Works Department, your work keeps the city flowing, literally! This role is hands-on, essential, and full of purpose. You'll be part of a crew that installs, repairs, and maintains sanitary sewer systems that serve thousands of residents, businesses, schools, and public facilities across the city. You wont just dig and drop pipe, your day could involve reading site plans to prep a neighborhood for new line installation, using lasergrade equipment to align sections of pipe with precision, or operating excavators and backhoes to safely uncover and replace aging infrastructure. Some days, you'll construct manholes from the ground up. Other days, you might troubleshoot a collapsed sewer line beneath a busy roadway, coordinating traffic control while ensuring the job site stays safe. Throughout your career, youll operate a variety of equipment, including dump trucks, rollers, loaders, and advanced surveying tools. You may begin with small residential projects and grow into complex capital improvement efforts that impact entire districts. This job isn't confined to a single routine. One week you may be restoring service to a hospital after a major line break; the next, you could be expanding infrastructure for a new business park. This position includes two (2) levels, distinguished by the complexity of work performed, qualifications, and years of related pipe laying experience. All levels require a high school diploma and : Pipelayer: Requires 1-2 years of directly related work experience; Pipelayer Specialist: Requires 5-7 years of directly related work experience with sanitary sewer assets and 1-2 years of lead worker or supervisor experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Before starting in this role, youll need to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) permit, with the practical CDL test to be completed within 60 days of hire. Within your first ear on the job, youll also complete certifications through the National Incident Management System (NIMS), including the Incident Command System, as well as the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Flagger and Basic Work Zone Traffic Control training.
