The position will start October 15th. # Mission Statement The Shepherd's Hand is a Christian nonprofit organization committed to serving the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of individuals experiencing homelessness or economic hardship. We provide a safe and welcoming place where guests can access meals, clothing, showers, laundry, supportive services, and faith-based encouragement. Through compassionate community partnerships, we promote hope, dignity, stability, and meaningful next steps toward housing, employment, recovery, and family reunification. # Position Summary The Shelter Coordinator is the lead resource for shelter staff training, education, coaching, and day-to-day operational support. This position monitors staff performance, identifies training needs, promotes consistent practices across all shifts, and helps maintain a safe, respectful, and well-organized shelter. The coordinator also provides direct shift coverage when employees call out sick, when vacancies occur, or when additional staffing is needed. Because dependable shelter coverage is essential, this position requires flexibility and the ability to work evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays as operational needs arise. # Essential Duties and Responsibilities ## Staff Training, Education & Support • Develop, coordinate, and deliver orientation and job-specific training for new shelter staff and volunteers. • Provide ongoing education and coaching on shelter policies, guest rights and responsibilities, professional boundaries, confidentiality, trauma-informed care, de-escalation, crisis response, documentation, and mandatory reporting requirements. • Train staff to complete guest intake, orientation, bed assignment, vehicle and pet verification, discharge procedures, incident reports, occupancy logs, and other required records accurately and consistently. • Observe staff practices, provide constructive feedback, reinforce expectations, and promptly address performance or knowledge gaps with the Executive Director. • Maintain training materials and training records and recommend updates when policies, procedures, regulations, or shelter needs change. • Lead or coordinate pre-season training, refresher training, shift briefings, and emergency drills. • Serve as an accessible resource for staff questions and promote clear, respectful communication among all shifts. ## Staffing & Shift Coverage • Assist with staff scheduling and help ensure adequate coverage for every shelter shift. • Fill in for employees who call out sick and provide coverage for open shifts, staffing shortages, emergencies, or other operational needs. • Remain flexible and reasonably available for short-notice schedule changes during the shelter season, including evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays. • Perform all shelter staff duties while covering a shift, including guest supervision, transportation when assigned, facility checks, documentation, conflict resolution, and emergency response. • Notify the Executive Director promptly of unresolved coverage needs, repeated attendance concerns, or circumstances that may affect safe shelter operations. ## Shelter Operations & Safety • Support and oversee daily shelter operations, including check-in, bed assignments, curfew, guest orientation, rule enforcement, and discharge procedures. • Promote a safe, clean, orderly, and respectful environment using trauma-informed, guest-centered, and consistent practices. • Conduct outine facility, safety, cleanliness, and security checks and follow up on concerns promptly. • Ensure staff understand and follow health, fire, safety, emergency, and incident-reporting procedures. • Respond calmly and professionally to conflicts, medical concerns, behavioral health crises, safety threats, and other emergencies; contact emergency services or crisis partners when appropriate. • Monitor supplies and basic operational needs, including meals, hygiene items, bedding, laundry, and cleaning supplies, and communicate needs before shortages occur. • Review pet and vehicle documentation in accordance with shelter policy, including vaccination, temperament, registration, and insurance requirements. ## Guest Support, Documentation & Collaboration • Ensure intake forms, occupancy records, shift notes, incident reports, and other required documents are complete, accurate, confidential, and submitted on time. • Provide the Executive Director with regular operational updates and requested monthly reports. • Monitor guest well-being and refer housing, employment, recovery, mental health, or crisis needs to the Community Solutions Specialist or appropriate provider. • Meet regularly with the Community Solutions Specialist at The Shepherd's Hand to support coordinated guest services and appropriate transitions. • Work cooperatively with community partners, volunteers, law enforcement, emergency services, and other providers as authorized. • Comfortably support guests' spiritual needs through prayer, Scripture, and faith-based encouragement, while respecting individual dignity and referring to another staff member when appropriate. • Perform other duties as assigned to support safe and effective shelter operations. # Qualifications • Associate or bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, human services, education, organizational leadership, or a related field preferred; relevant experience may be considered. • At least two years of experience in a homeless shelter, residential program, social service agency, crisis setting, or related environment preferred. • Experience training, coaching, supervising, or leading employees strongly preferred. • Working knowledge of homelessness, trauma, mental health, substance use, poverty, professional boundaries, and crisis intervention. • Strong communication, teaching, organization, conflict-resolution, and de-escalation skills. • Ability to provide calm direction, model expectations, maintain confidentiality, and work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds. • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Excel, data entry, email, scheduling, and basic reporting. • Current CPR/First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain it within the required timeframe. • Bilingual ability, including Spanish, is a plus. • Valid driver's license and insurability under the organization's vehicle policy if driving is required. • Ability to pass required background screening and any lawful pre-employment screening. # Work Schedule & Physical Requirements • Seasonal position generally scheduled for approximately 40 hours per week from October 15 through May 1.
