DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Houston Public Works is seeking candidates who can:
- Supervise electrical maintenance of water treatment plants and facilities.
- Plan, schedule, supervise, coordinate, review and monitor work assignments according to required plans andspecifications.
- Advise and interpret complex plans and specifications.
- Prepare and update repair and maintenance records on equipment to adhere to safety guidelines.
- Administer departmental policies and procedures related to operational and personnel activities.
- Coordinate site specific maintenance activities with outside contractors, City departments, etc.
- Prepare periodic budget estimates and operational reports as required and/or requested.
- Ensure preventative/corrective maintenance tasks are carried out in timely and efficient manner.
- Respond to emergency calls for electrical issues.
- Other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS This position may involve considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on an occasional basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time. There are occasional exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution.
This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier 1 Level. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires a high school degree or a GED certificate. Requires successful completion of an apprentice electrician program approved by the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training or the equivalent as recognized by the Electrical Safety and Licensing Advisory Board.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Six (6) years of journey-level experience in the area of work to be performed, either as an inside electrician or outside lineman, are required.
Substitution: A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering may be substituted for two years of the experience requirement.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS A valid State of Texas Journeyman Electrician License is required.
Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and comply with the City of Houston’s policy on driving. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in maintaining medium/low voltage systems and knowledge of electrical controls.
Preference will be given to applicants with prior experience in obtaining budgetary quotes, supervision of electrical personnel, and scheduling vendor activities.
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6. SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED: None However, the department may administer a skills assessment test.
SAFETY IMPACT POSITION: Yes This position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.
SALARY INFORMATION Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
