Full job description
What to Expect Heron Power is a startup company building cutting-edge power electronics for the 21st-century grid. We aim to debottleneck the growth of electricity generation and consumption with scalable, innovative, and less costly hardware solutions, accelerating the electrification of everything. Our first focus goal is to build better converters (inverters & rectifiers) to connect large-scale renewables, storage, and loads to the grid. Heron’s leadership team is made up of seasoned veterans who have designed and shipped gigawatts of power conversion products over the past decade. We understand that no one individual knows everything. We will all learn a lot together and from each other. We strive to build a collaborative, enriching environment conducive to personal, technical, and career growth. You can expect to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment, driven by first principles engineering, solving difficult problems.
Job Overview As a R&D Engineering Technician, you will be the backbone of our compliance lab operations. You will build and maintain test infrastructure, enforce lab quality and safety standards, and enable unique testing capabilities — ensuring our lab runs with the precision and discipline that regulatory certification demands.
How You Will Contribute Lab Infrastructure & Test Fixtures
-
Design, fabricate, and maintain test fixtures, including electrical wiring, soldering, and plumbing work required for power hardware test setups.
-
Maintain a clean and organized, operational area.
Test Equipment Operation
-
Set up, operate, and maintain test equipment including oscilloscopes, power analyzers, thermal chambers, data acquisition systems, and related instrumentation.
-
Support compliance test execution — configure equipment per test plans and ensure measurement integrity throughout test campaigns.
-
Troubleshoot equipment issues.
Quality Management & Safety
-
Assist engineering in maintaining a ISO 17025 Quality Management System controls across all lab activities.
-
Sustain 5S practices throughout the lab.
-
Contribute to root cause analysis on test failures, equipment anomalies, and process deviations.
What You Will Bring We prioritize candidates who are hands-on, accountable, and take genuine pride in what they produce. You’re not just maintaining a space — you’re building the foundation that our certification work depends on.
Must-Have Requirements
-
Proven ability to fabricate test fixtures, including hands-on electrical work (wiring, terminations, soldering, panel builds) and plumbing (fluid lines, fittings, pressure systems).
-
Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment used in test fixture fabrication.
-
Hands-on experience operating test and measurement equipment: oscilloscopes, power analyzers, thermal chambers, data loggers, and similar instrumentation.
-
Experience implementing and sustaining 5S in a lab or manufacturing environment.
-
Skilled at root cause analysis and hands-on debugging of test failures and process issues.
-
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and mechanical drawings.
-
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail — you set the standard for how the lab looks and runs.
-
Prior experience supervising or leading the work of other technicians.
-
Strong QA and testing philosophy.
-
Strong problem-solving skills.
-
Familiar with issue tracking software (i.e., JIRA).
-
Exposure to medium- or high-voltage power hardware test environments.
Nice-to-Haves
-
Experience in a compliance, certification, or regulatory test laboratory for power electronics, electrical equipment, or similar products.
-
Familiarity with UL, IEC, or IEEE test standards and certification processes.
If you are passionate about technology and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, we would love to hear from you. Join us in accelerating the electrification of everything at Heron Power. Heron Power provides competitive compensation (salary and equity) and benefits. The salary for this role ranges from $35-55 per hour.
