Full job description
The Department Public Health (DPH) is recruiting for Supervising Environmental Health Specialists who plan, supervise, and coordinate the activities of a group of environmental specialists, as well as technical and clerical personnel engaged in a specialized Environmental Health Services (EHS) program, such as Food Protection, Recreational Health, Insect and Rodent Vector Control, Water and Wastewater, and Waste Management. Positions may be assigned to district offices located in San Bernardino, Hesperia, or Rancho Cucamonga.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Disaster Service Worker: Positions in DPH are designated Disaster Service Workers and may be scheduled to work after-hours, weekends and holidays to cover emergency response. Work Assignment: Applicants must indicate willingness to accept work assignments in all of the following areas: Rancho Cucamonga, Hesperia, and San Bernardino in order to be eligible for these positions. Work Schedule: May be required to work some evenings, weekends, and on-call. Physical: May be required to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, or hike, when necessary, during the investigation process. Travel/License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained. Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation which includes verification of employment history and education, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening. Visa Sponsorship: Please note San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.Applicants must meet both of the following certification and experience requirements:
Certification: Possess and maintain a valid certificate of registration as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) issued by the State of California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
-AND-
Experience: Two and one half (2.5) years of full time equivalent experience as a journey-level REHS, which must include one (1) year in a lead or supervisory capacity* as an REHS. (NOTE: The lead/supervisory experience may run concurrently with the journey-level REHS experience. Experience as a Trainee is not considered qualifying, and should be clearly separated from journey-level REHS experience on the Application and Supplemental Questionnaire.)
*Substitution Note: A Master's degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university in Business/Public Administration and/or Management, -or- completion of the San Bernardino County Management Leadership Academy may substitute for up to six (6) months of the required one (1) year of lead or supervisory experience. Examination Procedure: There will be a competitive evaluation of qualifications based on the information provided in the Application and the Supplemental Questionnaire. You are encouraged to include detailed descriptions of your qualifying experience and skills, as only the most highly qualified applicants will be referred to the Department.
