Full job description

  • Examines, diagnoses, and treats the inmate population presenting with acute, chronic, and emergent medical conditions.

  • Orders and interprets diagnostic tests, imaging, and lab work.

  • Develops and manages treatment plans, prescribes medications, and coordinates specialty referrals and off-site care when clinically indicated.

  • Collaborates with nursing staff, mid-level providers, and other physicians.

  • Attends and participates in staff meetings, case presentation and seminars.

  • Oversees preparation and progress notes, summaries, and general evaluations of patient medical records.

  • Documents all patient encounters accurately and timely in the EHR in accordance with medical-legal standards.

  • Participates in on-call rotation, providing after-hours coverage and telephonic/virtual consultation for urgent medical needs across assigned institutions.

  • Ensures compliance and adherence to policies and state and federal regulations pertaining to the delivery of medical services.

  • Maintains required license, certifications, and continuing medical education.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited medical school with current license or eligibility for licensure to practice medicine in South Carolina.

  • Completion of an internship or one (1) year residency training is required.

  • Current basic life support (BLS) certification and approved prescriptive privileges, such as DEA registration are required.

Preferred correctional healthcare experience is strongly preferred.
