Job Overview

The Managing Director of Development, Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC) is a senior member and leader of the GUMC Development team. Reporting directly to the Vice President for GUMC Advancement, the MDoD will provide strategic vision to maximize philanthropic potential for the LCCC, while also serving as its lead fundraiser. Through the direct management of a team of fundraisers, oversight of significant revenue-generation engagement opportunities and events related to the LCCC, and personal portfolio work for annual fundraising goals, this is an important position that will have broad reach and impact. Cancer has been identified as one of five strategic pillars of excellence for the GUMC, and the MDOD will provide critical leadership to ensure Lombardi meets philanthropic targets, leading strategic growth in revenue over the next several years.

As a senior strategist, the MDoD will be charged with creating and implementing the vision for the comprehensive plan of all cancer-related fundraising needs at Georgetown. From ideation of strategic priorities to event design and execution, to cultivating and developing partnerships with the center’s highest profile philanthropic relationships, this role will oversee all LCCC efforts that have a development lens. This includes all major and principal gift fundraising, annual giving, special events and related fundraising and stewardship to help ensure the Lombardi Cancer Center’s continuing role as a world-class leader in cancer care. It is critical that this position establishes strong and effective relationships with the LCCC Director and other key GUMC leaders to align philanthropic priorities with the center’s strategic goals. The MDoD will also build strong relationships with MedStar partners and central Advancement colleagues, working to enhance collaboration across teams.

The MDoD will oversee the LCCC frontline development team of four major gift officers, and the Bellringer (https://bellringer.org/) team. The Lombardi development team manages relationships that include individual giving, foundation support and corporate partnerships . Georgetown BellRinger is an annual community bike ride and fundraising event that directly supports cancer research at Georgetown University's Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. Entering its fifth year, this community event raises philanthropic support, increases market awareness and helps identify new supporters.

The MDoD will also guide and advise on the development-related work and activity of LCCC leadership and faculty, and manage LCCC-related volunteer groups as needed. A key piece to this role will be effective and efficient return on investment on all LCCC event and volunteer work, with an eye towards strong philanthropic partnerships.

As a senior fundraiser, this position will personally build and efficiently manage a portfolio of GUMC constituents, including grateful patients. They will be expected to raise $5M or more annually as the portfolio matures, closing gifts that are focused in the leadership and principal giving space. The MDoD will also have a personal visit goal of approximately 75 meetings annually to advance donor conversations and gift opportunities. This portfolio will comprise individual, corporate and foundation donors, requiring efficiency and expertise in all of these unique areas of engagement and partnership.

Work Interactions

This position will work collaboratively with diverse departments within GUMC Advancement, the central Office of Advancement, select MedStar Health colleagues, and the Lombardi team and community at large.

Interactions and partnerships will include: staff, faculty, university administrators, donors, parents, and non-alumni constituents. The Managing Director will serve as a senior member of the GUMC Advancement leadership team and as a partner in the development leadership function, including a special relationship with GUMC staffs, the campaign team, Donor Relations and Stewardship, as well as internal partners in Alumni Relations, Annual Fund, Marketing and Communications.
