Full job description
Police Property & Evidence Technicians play a vital role in supporting law enforcement operations by ensuring the safe, secure, and accurate management of property and evidence. Property & Evidence Technician is a non-sworn position that will be responsible for assisting PBP officers in managing the receipt, storage, and safekeeping of property and evidence collected. They maintain accurate records, ensure the integrity of the chain of custody, and dispose of property according to legal and departmental procedures. Technicians will work in a support role, ensuring PBP policies are adhered to under the rules of criminal procedure of Pennsylvania. Individuals assigned to this task are expected to perform the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, applying program knowledge, and exercising judgment and initiative while having contact with the public.
Department: Public Safety/Bureau of Police Salary: $56,760 per year Union: This position is included in the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, Local 2719 bargaining unit and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Posting Type: Announcement/City First Bid: Current AFSCME 2719 City employees must submit bid applications by October 10, 2026, to be considered. Civil Service Classification: Non-Competitive General Requirements: You must submit or show proof of all the following at the time of filing your application (unless otherwise indicated below), or your application will be disqualified. Disqualifications based on any of these General Application Requirements are not subject to a Civil Service appeal.

A current, valid Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License (or out-of-state equivalent) is required prior to appointment and must be maintained throughout employment. WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show one (1) year of full-time experience of relevant administrative experience and/or police property and evidence experience. (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)

EDUCATION/TRAINING: The application must clearly show an Associate's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field. (See NOTE under General Application Requirements regarding education/training verification.)

EQUIVALENCY: Education/training and/or work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position (based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above). The Total Qualifying Requirement is three (3) years. (See NOTE under the General Application Requirements Section above regarding the verification of education/training).

You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position. Candidates who receive job offers must pass a medical examination (when applicable) before the date of hire.

Receives and documents property and evidence from officers, detectives, and other sources.

Safely stores and organizes property and evidence in a secure and organized manner.

Conducts regular inventory of evidence room and property.

Maintains accurate and detailed records of the chain of custody, ensuring the integrity of evidence.

Maintains procedures for the custody and handling of evidence.

Tracks statute of limitations and legal time frames.

Checks for compliance with regulations, processes evidence for transfer to crime laboratories for testing and to prosecutors for court cases.

Maintains confidentiality of City records and/or confidential discussions pertaining to City records.

Assists individuals inquiring about property or evidence.

Assesses evidence for disposition, whether it should be returned to the owner, destroyed, or disposed of according to legal requirements.

Exemplifies the Bureau rules and regulations, both on and off duty.

Performs other related tasks and duties as assigned or required.
