Job Description

American Express Platform Services builds and delivers enterprise platforms that enable business-critical applications to move faster from concept to production. Our mission is to accelerate time-to-market by providing modern, scalable, and reliable technology capabilities across American Express.

The Global Infrastructure Customer Experience team is responsible for delivering a world-class, enterprise-wide infrastructure portal that provides a seamless, unified experience for managing infrastructure services across American Express. We are focused on simplifying how teams discover, access, and manage infrastructure capabilities while delivering an exceptional customer experience through standardized, modern, cloud-native engineering practices.

We are looking for individuals who thrive in a high-performing, collaborative engineering environment and are passionate about building intuitive, high-quality user experiences. In this role, you will have the opportunity to solve complex technical challenges, influence engineering standards and best practices, and provide technical leadership and mentorship across internal infrastructure teams.

If you are passionate about modern engineering, exceptional customer experiences, and helping teams build and deliver technology more effectively, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact at enterprise scale.

Responsibilities

As a Senior Java Developer, you will design, build, and operate scalable, secure, and highly available cloud-native applications and services that automate and simplify the delivery of infrastructure capabilities across American Express. This is a full-stack engineering role with a strong emphasis on Java and cloud-native development, leveraging technologies such as Java, Node.js, REST APIs, React, Vert.x, Kubernetes, and Red Hat OpenShift.

You will play a key role in developing our enterprise infrastructure portal, creating a modern, intuitive experience that enables internal technology teams to discover, provision, integrate, and manage infrastructure services efficiently.

  • Design and develop cloud-native applications: Architect and build scalable, resilient, and highly available applications and services running on Kubernetes-based PaaS platforms, including Red Hat OpenShift.

  • Deliver full-stack capabilities: Develop end-to-end solutions across backend services, REST APIs, integrations, and modern web experiences, with a focus on Java-based services and React user interfaces.

  • Build distributed systems: Design and develop services supporting distributed computing capabilities such as caching, search, resource management, job execution, asynchronous processing, and cluster management.

  • Engineer for cloud-native environments: Apply cloud-native architecture principles, containerization patterns, Kubernetes capabilities, and platform engineering practices to build reliable and maintainable enterprise applications.

  • Implement enterprise-grade security: Design applications with multiple layers of authentication and authorization, integrating with enterprise identity platforms such as Okta and Active Directory while adhering to established security standards.

  • Drive observability and operational excellence: Implement logging, monitoring, and diagnostics using platforms such as Splunk and the ELK stack to rapidly identify, troubleshoot, and resolve application and integration issues across distributed environments.

  • Leverage AI-assisted engineering: Use AI-enabled development tools such as GitHub Copilot and Devin to improve developer productivity, accelerate software delivery, and enhance code quality. Develop custom GPT-based solutions and engineering assistants that help other teams efficiently contribute code and integrate their infrastructure services with the platform.

  • Support Linux-based services: Design, deploy, and operate services on Linux virtual machines when workloads cannot be containerized, applying strong knowledge of Linux, virtualization, networking, and containerized environments.

  • Ensure resilience and disaster recovery: Own and continuously improve disaster recovery readiness for supported applications and services, including planning, coordination, documentation, and execution of annual disaster recovery testing.

  • Provide technical leadership: Influence architecture and engineering decisions, establish reusable patterns and development standards, conduct code and design reviews, and mentor engineers and contributing teams across the infrastructure organization.

  • Collaborate across teams: Partner with product, infrastructure, security, architecture, and engineering teams to translate customer needs into scalable technical solutions and continuously improve the infrastructure developer experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with strong hands-on expertise in Java and modern full-stack application development.

  • Proven experience designing, developing, and supporting enterprise-scale applications in complex, highly available production environments.

  • Strong hands-on development experience with Java and Vert.x , along with working knowledge of Node.js, React, and modern web application frameworks.

  • Strong foundation in computer science fundamentals , including data structures, algorithms, concurrency, asynchronous programming, and their practical implementation across multiple programming languages.

  • Deep understanding of REST APIs, microservices, and distributed systems , including architectural patterns such as circuit breakers, service discovery, resiliency, fault tolerance, asynchronous processing, and horizontally scalable services.

  • Demonstrated experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and microservices , particularly for infrastructure automation, integration, provisioning, and lifecycle management.

  • Hands-on experience developing and deploying cloud-native applications on Kubernetes-based platforms , with a strong understanding of containers, orchestration, scalability, resiliency, and modern cloud-native architecture principles.

  • Experience with GitHub, GitHub Actions, and CI/CD practices , including automated build, test, security, deployment, and release pipelines within enterprise development environments.

  • Proficiency with AI-assisted software engineering tools , such as GitHub Copilot, Devin, and ChatGPT, with demonstrated ability to apply AI throughout the software development lifecycle to accelerate development, testing, troubleshooting, documentation, and code quality.

  • Experience working in Agile engineering environments , collaborating across product, architecture, infrastructure, security, and engineering teams to deliver capabilities iteratively and continuously.

  • Working knowledge of Linux operating systems , including system administration, troubleshooting, networking, process management, and operating applications across virtualized and containerized environments.

  • Strong understanding of application security and enterprise authentication/authorization patterns , including experience integrating applications with identity and access management solutions.

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose complex application, infrastructure, integration, and distributed-system issues.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills , with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership and mentorship , influence engineering practices, conduct design and code reviews, and collaborate effectively with teams contributing to a shared enterprise platform.
