JR933

Lyric is the trusted leader in healthcare decision intelligence. Built on more than 35 years of proven results, Lyric combines responsible AI with clinical, payment, regulatory, and policy expertise to deliver transparent, auditable insights in milliseconds across real-time claims workflows. Lyric augments human decision-making so health plans can make faster, more accurate payments while maintaining full control. Today, Lyric supports 200 million lives, with nine of the top 10 U.S. health plans relying on its platform to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and support accurate payments.

Applicants must already be legally authorized to work in the U.S. Visa sponsorship/sponsorship assumption and other immigration support are not available for this position.

The Software Engineer Intern will join Lyric during an important period of technology modernization as we evolve our payment integrity platform, modernize legacy applications, build clean and scalable APIs, improve data performance, and prepare our technology for future growth.

This 12-week internship is designed for a student who has completed their third year of a Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related university program and wants to apply their academic experience to real production software challenges.

Working alongside experienced Lyric engineers, the intern will contribute to meaningful software engineering projects across full-stack development, APIs, cloud technologies, databases, automated testing, and AI-assisted software development.

A key component of the experience will be learning how modern engineering teams use AI coding tools and agents to accelerate development while maintaining high standards for code quality, security, testing, and human judgment.

Prior professional software engineering experience is not required.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the design, development, testing, and delivery of software supporting Lyric's healthcare technology platform

  • Work alongside experienced engineers on modernization initiatives involving modern .NET, APIs, databases, cloud technologies, and web applications

  • Assist with developing and testing RESTful APIs and microservices that support scalable application architecture

  • Contribute to front-end development using technologies and frameworks such as Angular, React, JavaScript, or TypeScript

  • Gain hands-on experience working with relational databases, including SQL Server, and learn how engineers approach data modeling, queries, application performance, and data integrity

  • Use modern AI-assisted development tools to support coding, debugging, refactoring, test creation, documentation, and other software engineering activities

  • Learn how to effectively evaluate AI-generated code, identify incorrect or incomplete output, and apply human judgment before incorporating AI-generated work into a codebase

  • Participate in code reviews and receive feedback from experienced engineers on coding practices, architecture, testing, maintainability, and performance

  • Develop automated unit and integration tests and learn how testing is incorporated into modern software development and CI/CD practices

  • Assist with identifying, debugging, and resolving software defects and performance issues

  • Gain exposure to Azure and/or AWS and understand how modern applications are developed, deployed, monitored, and operated in cloud environments

  • Learn how observability, structured logging, monitoring, and application telemetry help engineering teams understand application health and troubleshoot issues

  • Work collaboratively with Engineering, Product, UX, DevOps, QA, and other stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into working software

  • Apply secure software development practices and learn how engineering teams protect sensitive healthcare and customer information

  • Participate in Agile development activities, including sprint planning, technical discussions, demonstrations, and retrospectives

  • Maintain clear technical documentation for the software and projects you contribute to

  • Complete a defined internship project or meaningful product deliverable and present the solution, technical approach, results, and lessons learned to Engineering and Technology leadership at the conclusion of the internship

Required Qualifications (By start of Internship)

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a closely related technical field

  • Expected to have completed the third year of undergraduate study prior to the start of the internship

  • Completion of university coursework in programming, software development, data structures, algorithms, databases, or related computer science disciplines

  • Foundational programming experience gained through coursework, academic projects, personal projects, hackathons, research, or other university activities

  • Familiarity with at least one modern programming language such as:C#JavaPythonJavaScript/TypeScriptC++Or a comparable object-oriented programming language

  • Foundational understanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, and software development principles

  • Basic understanding of relational databases and SQL gained through coursework or project experience

  • Familiarity with source control concepts and tools such as Git/GitHub

  • Interest in using AI as part of the software development lifecycle while understanding the importance of validating AI-generated work

  • No prior professional software engineering experience required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Academic, personal, research, or hackathon projects involving full-stack application development, APIs, cloud computing, databases, or distributed applications

  • Exposure through coursework or projects to C# and .NET

  • Familiarity with front-end technologies such as Angular, React, JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, or CSS

  • Coursework or project experience involving SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, or another relational database

  • Exposure to Microsoft Azure, AWS, or another cloud computing platform

  • Experience experimenting with AI coding tools or generative AI technologies such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, ChatGPT, or similar tools through coursework or personal projects

  • Interest in learning how AI agents can support activities such as code generation, debugging, refactoring, testing, documentation, and software modernization

  • Participation in programming clubs, hackathons, coding competitions, university research, open-source projects, or other technical extracurricular activities

  • Interest in healthcare technology, FinTech, AI, cloud engineering, distributed systems, or large-scale software modernization

During the internship, the Software Engineer Intern will have the opportunity to:

  • Build software that contributes to real healthcare technology products and modernization initiatives

  • Work directly with experienced Software, Staff, and Principal Engineers

  • Gain practical exposure to modern .NET, APIs, cloud infrastructure, databases, front-end technologies, automated testing, and distributed systems

  • Learn how enterprise engineering teams modernize complex legacy technology while continuing to support real customers

  • Develop practical experience using AI coding tools and agents as engineering force multipliers—not simply as autocomplete tools

  • Learn how experienced engineers determine when AI-generated code is correct, when it needs refinement, and when human judgment should override it

  • Participate in professional code reviews, architecture discussions, Agile development, and modern software delivery practices

  • Understand how software engineering changes when building technology that handles sensitive healthcare and payment data

  • Develop experience collaborating across Engineering, Product, UX, DevOps, and QA

  • Build a portfolio-worthy technical project with measurable product or engineering impact

  • Present their work to Lyric Engineering and Technology leadership at the conclusion of the internship
