CORE JOB SUMMARY

The Executive Director, Laboratory Operations performs highly responsible scientific and managerial work in directing the operations for the assigned laboratory. An employee in this position manages, plans, and coordinates the work of technical and clerical employees that perform chemical, physical, and instrumental analysis. Additionally, the Executive Director, Laboratory Operations leverages expertise in scientific knowledge to support medical staff and leads laboratory operations in a cost effective and efficient manner that is consistent with the needs of the department and its clients.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Plans, directs, supervises, develops, and coordinates the work of subordinate employees.

  • Prepares and administers annual budget for laboratory operations.

  • Reviews and approves requisitions for materials, equipment, and supplies.

  • Prepares reports concerning the status of laboratory operations.

  • Develops long-range plans for the technological development of laboratory operations.

  • Ensures that all laboratories are compliant with state and federal licensure requirements.

  • Establishes all methods of qualitative and quantitative analysis, maintains required CME credits, and participates in departmental in-service training.

  • Defines laboratory goals and objectives.

  • Guides staff members in establishing appropriate priorities and periodically evaluates laboratory performance in relation to goals and objectives.

  • Ensures internal control oversight and compliance with laws and regulations, safeguarding of assets, compliance with University policies and procedures, reliability of internal and external reporting, and efficiency and effectiveness of operations. Creates an effective control environment, conducts risk assessment, implements and monitors controls.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS Education:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required

Experience:

Minimum 7 years of relevant experience required

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

  • Provides executive oversight for the integrated performance of Blood Bank, Clinical Pathology, and Anatomic Pathology operations to ensure operational alignment, standardization, and achievement of institutional objectives.

  • Directs enterprise laboratory quality, patient safety, and risk management initiatives and ensures the effective resolution of significant regulatory, operational, and quality-related issues.

  • Provides executive oversight of laboratory accreditation activities, regulatory inspections, corrective action programs, and continuous readiness efforts across all laboratory divisions.

  • Serves as the primary operational representative for Laboratory Operations in executive, hospital, physician, and interdisciplinary forums and acts on behalf of laboratory leadership as designated.

  • Develops and maintains strategic partnerships with medical directors, pathologists, physician leaders, hospital administration, nursing leadership, and operational stakeholders to advance organizational and clinical objectives.

  • Provides executive consultation and operational guidance regarding laboratory service performance, emerging operational risks, capacity constraints, and strategic opportunities.

  • Champions laboratory transformation initiatives through automation, artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, and digital technologies to improve operational performance, quality, scalability, and customer experience.

  • Directs the evaluation and implementation of innovative laboratory technologies, operating models, and workflow redesign strategies to support future organizational needs.

  • Promotes a culture of continuous improvement and data-driven decision-making by leveraging enterprise analytics to identify opportunities and measure operational outcomes.
