Position Details

General Statement

Following an integrated, collaborative model, Student Wellness unites the components of the health and well-being for MSU students including prevention, health promotion, public health, medical services, dental services, and counseling & psychological services.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide high quality diagnostic and therapeutic psychiatric health care to MSU students in a compassionate, ethical, and professional manner.

  • In this role, a Psychiatric Mental Health NP ( PMHNP ) or Psychiatric Physician Assistant ( PPA ) is expected to:

  • Obtain a comprehensive history, diagnose disorders, prescribe psychotropic and other medications to treat symptoms of psychiatric disorders, substance use disorder, and improve functional health.

  • Order and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic tests if indicated.

  • Prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments.

  • Provide appropriate patient education and coordinate referrals to other mental health care services if needed.

  • Work closely with the MSU Psychiatrist and integrated behavioral health team, consulting on and supporting diagnoses and treatment options with Medical Services and counseling staff.

  • Provide urgent psychiatric consultation and care for acutely ill students, including through same-day access appointments, as needed.

  • Serve as a collaborative resource for Student Wellness providers, fielding curbside consultations, questions, and clinical advice from Medical Services and Counseling and Psychological Services staff regarding psychiatric care.

  • Precept and supervise nurse practitioner students, as assigned.

  • Participate in designated committees and integrated treatment teams with Counseling and Psychological Services, as assigned.

  • Participate in Student Wellness outreach, education, and promotional activities, such as speaking at student clubs, campus events, or other engagements, as assigned.

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives related to psychiatric and behavioral health services.

  • Contribute clinical input to the development and revision of psychiatric care protocols and policies, as assigned.

  • Provide culturally responsive psychiatric care that reflects the needs of MSU’s diverse student population, including LGBTQ+, international, and other underrepresented students.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in nursing with Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner specialty and current national certification as a PMHNP . OR – Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program; plus completion of a post-graduate Psychiatry fellowship or completion of a Certificate of Additional Qualification ( CAQ ) in Psychiatry; and current certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

  • Montana license to practice as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with Prescriptive Authority OR Montana license to practice as a Psychiatric Physician Assistant (or eligible).

  • Current DEA registration (or eligible).

  • Demonstrated experience with treatment skills required of a PMHNP / PPA provider including knowledge of current health trends and current medications.

  • Evidence of ongoing continuing education in psychopharmacology, diagnostic criteria, and treatment guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Two or more years of experience as a psychiatric provider preferred; new graduates are welcome to apply.

  • Experience working in a Medical Services setting or as a consultant to Medical Services providers and counseling staff.

  • College health experience as a physician assistant or nurse practitioner.

  • The ability to develop a working knowledge of Student Health Services’ organization and services, the basic rules governing patient/client treatment, standard procedures, clinical records and terminology.

  • The ability to consistently exercise initiative and good judgment.

  • The ability to communicate effectively with employees, non- MSU providers, and the public.

  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers in a team-oriented environment.

  • The ability to efficiently use an electronic health records system.

  • The ability to represent Student Health Services and its programs to others in a professional and courteous manner.

  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment when working in a stressful, fast-paced environment.

  • Current Basic Life Support ( BLS ) Certification or ability to obtain by start of employment.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

  1. License to practice as Nurse Practitioner with Prescriptive Authority in the State of Montana OR License to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Montana.

  2. Current DEA registration.

  3. Current BLS certification or ability to obtain prior to start date.
