Staff Accountant

Description We are looking for a Staff Accountant to join a rental and leasing services organization in Virginia. This contract-to-permanent opportunity is ideal for an accounting specialist who is confident managing core close activities, preparing journal entries, and maintaining accurate financial records. The role offers the chance to contribute to a fast-paced accounting function while using strong Excel skills to analyze data, support reporting, and improve day-to-day efficiency.

Responsibilities:

• Prepare and post recurring and non-recurring journal entries with a high level of accuracy throughout each monthly cycle.

• Perform month-end close activities, ensuring deadlines are met and financial records are complete and properly supported.

• Reconcile general ledger accounts and investigate variances to maintain reliable and accurate balances.

• Review accounting data, identify discrepancies, and resolve issues that could affect financial reporting.

• Use advanced Excel functions such as pivot tables and XLOOKUP to organize data, validate transactions, and support account analysis.

• Maintain documentation for entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules in accordance with accounting best practices.

• Partner with internal team members to gather information needed for close processes and ongoing accounting operations.

• Assist with process updates and accounting-related system changes as needed while helping preserve data integrity and reporting accuracy. Requirements • 5+ years of accounting experience, including hands-on responsibility for month-end close activities.

• Proven background in preparing journal entries and working within a general ledger environment.

• Experience performing account reconciliations and researching variances independently.

• Strong Excel skills, including the ability to use pivot tables and XLOOKUP effectively.

• Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to manage a steady volume of monthly entries.

• Strong organizational and time-management skills in a deadline-driven setting.

• Ability to provide strong references that reflect dependable accounting performance.
