Full job description

Description

Are you excited about building software that operates at massive scale and directly impacts millions of customers? As a Software Development Engineer II at Amazon, you will design, build, and deliver features that solve real customer problems while raising the bar on software quality across your team. You will own the full software development lifecycle — from working backwards to understand customer needs, through design, implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing operations. This is an opportunity to grow your technical skills, mentor fellow engineers, and contribute meaningfully to systems that matter.

Key job responsibilities

  • Design and implement software solutions across major components of your team's systems, balancing functional requirements with scalability, maintainability, and performance considerations.

  • Own the full development lifecycle for your features, including defining requirements, writing high-quality code, conducting thorough testing, deploying to production, and supporting operational health.

  • Collaborate with customers, stakeholders, and cross-functional peers to understand business context and ensure your solutions deliver the right outcomes.

  • Actively participate in code reviews, providing constructive feedback to teammates and using the process as a mechanism to coach others on producing clean, maintainable code.

  • Identify root causes of operational issues and drive permanent fixes, while continuously improving your team's technical processes and operational practices.

A day in the life

You start your morning reviewing operational metrics and addressing any alerts from overnight. By mid-morning, you are deep in a design discussion with teammates, whiteboarding approaches for a new feature and evaluating tradeoffs. After lunch, you write and test code, then review pull requests from peers — offering feedback that helps the whole team improve. You wrap up by updating documentation and syncing with your manager on priorities for the week ahead.

About the team

Our team is focused on building reliable, scalable software that serves Amazon's customers. We value collaboration, clear communication, and a commitment to getting the details right. Every engineer on the team has a voice in technical decisions, and we actively invest in each other's growth through mentorship and knowledge sharing. We are looking ahead to new challenges and welcome engineers who are curious, thoughtful, and eager to make a lasting impact.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

  • 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • 1+ years of software development engineer or related occupational experience

  • 1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded or distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using: C#, C++, Java, or Perl experience

  • 1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience

  • Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field

  • Experience programming with at least one software programming language

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
