About the Role

Robert Half is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Accountant for a contract opportunity with a respected nonprofit organization in New Haven, Connecticut. This position is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys supporting mission-driven organizations and has a strong background in financial reporting, general ledger accounting, month-end close processes, and compliance.

The Senior Accountant will play a key role in maintaining the organization's financial integrity, supporting leadership with reporting and analysis, and ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger activity

  • Lead month-end and year-end closing processes

  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements and management reports

  • Analyze financial data and assist with budgeting and forecasting activities

  • Reconcile bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, and restricted funds

  • Assist with grant tracking, reporting, and compliance requirements

  • Support annual audit preparation and coordinate requests from external auditors

  • Monitor internal controls and recommend process improvements

  • Review accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll transactions for accuracy

  • Assist with cash flow analysis and financial planning initiatives

  • Partner with department leaders to provide financial guidance and reporting support

  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required

  • 4+ years of accounting experience, including general ledger and financial reporting responsibilities

  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial statement preparation

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel

  • Experience with accounting software and ERP systems

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills

  • High attention to detail and accuracy

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in a nonprofit organization

  • Knowledge of fund accounting and grant accounting

  • Experience supporting audits and preparing audit schedules

  • Familiarity with nonprofit financial reporting requirements, including restricted and unrestricted funds

  • CPA or CPA candidate preferred

Schedule

  • Full-time, Monday through Friday

  • Standard business hours

  • Contract assignment with potential for extension based on organizational needs
