Full job description

Job Title: Systems EngineerJob Description

As a Systems Engineer, you will have the opportunity to solve complex problems by applying first-principles reasoning throughout the design, build, test, iteration, and scale-up phases. You will be responsible for designing and building mechanical and electro-mechanical systems, supporting ongoing development and field deployments. Your role involves simplifying designs aggressively to meet cost requirements and scaling successful solutions from benchtop models to fieldable systems. You will also support field deployments, including travel for building and commissioning test systems, and customer/vendor site visits.

Responsibilities

  • Solve problems end-to-end, from design through to scale-up.

  • Design and build hardware for mechanical and electro-mechanical systems.

  • Work across disciplines to integrate mechanical assemblies, sensors, controllers, and other components.

  • Simplify designs to meet cost requirements.

  • Translate benchtop and numerical models into fieldable, scalable systems with attention to manufacturability, cost, schedule, reliability, and serviceability.

  • Support field deployments with travel for building and commissioning test systems.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in mechanical systems, electrical systems, R&D engineering, prototyping, and systems engineering.

  • BS/MS in mechanical or electrical engineering or related field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Evidence of enjoyment in building and problem-solving in past work or personal projects.

  • Strong foundation in physical sciences and working knowledge of heat transfer, fluid mechanics, mechanics of materials, and electrical circuits.

  • Fluency with engineering calculations and capability to rapidly bound unfamiliar problems using hand calculations and simple models.

  • Ability to independently verify quantitative results and recognize implausible data.

  • Comfort with mechanical design/CAD, electrical component selection, sensors/instrumentation, and data acquisition.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in industrial process environments is preferred.

  • Demonstrated low ego and high ownership with the willingness to change paths based on evidence and test results.

  • Ability to work hands-on in both lab and outdoor field environments.

Work Environment

You will be working in a dynamic environment that requires hands-on involvement in both lab and outdoor field settings. The role necessitates getting involved in practical, hands-on tasks, and you should be prepared to 'get dirty' when necessary to ensure the system's functionality and cost-effectiveness.
