Full job description

We are seeking an expert Senior Data Architect to design, implement, and optimize the enterprise data warehouse that directly supports the FTA's mission to improve public mass transportation across the nation. This is a high-impact role where you will work with our team to replace legacy systems, implement cutting-edge cloud data solutions, and provide the architectural backbone that enables advanced analytics and data-driven decision-making for a vital government agency.

Essential Duties:

  • Lead Data Architecture: Own the overall data architecture, including the design, development, and maintenance of scalable data models, data marts, and database solutions that align with the FTA's business requirements.

  • Data Modeling & Design: Create and maintain logical and physical database models using tools like Microsoft Visio. Design hierarchies, attributes, and metrics to maximize drill-down and analytical capabilities within the Enterprise Data Warehouse.

  • ETL & Data Integration: Oversee the integration of disparate data sets from critical FTA systems (e.g., NTD, TRAMS) and external sources, ensuring the development of robust, efficient ETL/ELT pipelines.

  • Technical Leadership & Governance: Serve as the subject matter expert for data architecture, collaborating with stakeholders to gather requirements and providing guidance to development teams. Support enterprise data and analytics governance activities to ensure data integrity and quality.

  • Cloud Modernization: Work with the data lead to help assess and optimize the current AWS cloud infrastructure for performance, cost-efficiency, and scalability. Assist with the migration of the technology stack to modern platforms like Databricks and Data Lakes.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.

  • 10+ years of professional experience in Business Intelligence, Data Warehousing, Data Modeling, and Database Design.

  • Proven experience architecting and optimizing data solutions within a cloud environment, specifically AWS.

  • Expertise in dimensional modeling techniques and tools for effective reporting and analytics.

  • In-depth knowledge of and hands-on experience with relational database platforms, specifically SQL Server and MariaDB.

  • Demonstrated experience designing and building complex ETL/ELT processes using tools such as SSIS, Python, or Databricks.

  • Strong ability to translate business needs into technical requirements and communicate complex technical concepts effectively to stakeholders and federal leads.

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Data Modeling Certification (DMC) from the Data Modeling Institute.

  • Experience with the Strategy analytics platform; certifications in Strategy are a significant plus.

  • Familiarity with data replication tools such as AWS DMS.

  • Experience with additional BI and visualization tools like Power BI, Map Box, or Vitara.

  • Working knowledge of project management and documentation tools such as Jira and Confluence.

  • Previous experience supporting a federal government agency, particularly within the Department of Transportation.
