Job Title: Construction EngineerJob Description
The Construction Engineer coordinates and performs field observation for transportation and public works projects, ensuring that roadway, bridge, building components, and related infrastructure are constructed in compliance with contract plans, specifications, and applicable regulations. This role focuses on on-site monitoring, construction oversight, and documentation for transportation projects, particularly those involving state and tollway agencies, while collaborating closely with contractors, project stakeholders, and internal teams.
Responsibilities

Coordinate and perform on-site observation of public works, street, highway, bridge, building components, infrastructure, and track right-of-way on construction projects.

Conduct detailed field inspections of construction installations, including materials, grade elevations, underground facilities, construction safety precautions, minor concrete structures, street light installations, traffic signal installations, traffic control devices, and erosion and siltation control measures.

Verify that construction work complies with contract plans, technical specifications, encroachment permits, and applicable city, state, and other governmental regulations, including relevant DOT requirements.

Review construction plans, specifications, encroachment permits, and other project documents and perform field measurements as needed to confirm quantities and compliance.

Participate in project meetings to discuss construction details, clarify requirements, and help resolve issues with contractors and other project stakeholders.

Identify on-site project problems and non-conformance issues, document observations, and promptly alert appropriate members of the project team.

Monitor the correction of project deficiencies and track progress on remedial actions to ensure timely resolution.

Recommend formal approval of contractor payment applications based on verified quantities and satisfactory completion of work.

Maintain accurate documentation of contract quantities in accordance with IDOT requirements and other applicable agency standards.

Support construction oversight and permitting activities for transportation construction projects, ensuring proper coordination and regulatory compliance.

Use CMMS and related systems to track work, manage documentation, and support project reporting.

Collaborate with senior engineers and project leaders, contributing technical insights and supporting the successful delivery of transportation projects.

Provide clear written and verbal communication to internal teams, contractors, and external stakeholders regarding project status, issues, and resolutions.
Essential Skills
-
Bachelor of Science (BS) in Civil Engineering.
-
At least 6 years of civil inspection or Resident Engineer experience on transportation projects.

Strong knowledge of roadway construction methods, transportation construction practices, and construction materials.

Experience with construction oversight, on-site monitoring, and permitting for transportation projects.
-
Strong knowledge and practical use of CMMS for construction and infrastructure projects.
-
Demonstrated experience working with DOT regulations, including IDOT and tollway-related projects.
-
IDOT Documentation of Contract Quantities experience and proficiency.
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
-
Valid drivers license and reliable means of transportation.
Additional Skills & Qualifications

Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred or the ability to obtain it within approximately one year.

Experience with traffic signal installations, street lighting, and traffic control devices.

Familiarity with erosion and siltation control installations and related environmental compliance.

Ability to collaborate effectively with contractors, project stakeholders, and multidisciplinary internal teams.

Ability to train under senior engineers and progress toward obtaining a PE license.
-
Interest in working on high-visibility transportation projects with strong regional impact.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $90000.00 - $120000.00/yr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
