Full job description
Title: Platform Design Systems Lead
Location: Pensacola, FL (Hybrid/Remote)
Pay Rate: Open W2 ad established 1099 options
Position Type: Contract
This is a long term contracting position located in either Vienna, VA or Winchester, VA or Pensacola, FL or San Diego, CA. This role can also be remote. We are able to work with W2 and established 1099 candidates (no c2c).
This is a platform-level design-system leader who ensures that a product platform consistently adopts and implements enterprise design-system standards. The role sits between design, front-end engineering, product, accessibility, and leadership, focusing more on strategy, governance, adoption, documentation, and enablement than day-to-day coding.
This is more of a design-system strategy/governance and platform enablement leadership role with enough technical knowledge to work credibly with engineers. This role requires someone with actual design-system adoption/governance experience, strong front-end technical fluency, accessibility/WCAG, and the ability to bridge design and engineering – we are not looking for a UI designer or developer.
The person will:
-
Own the platform design-system roadmap, governance, adoption, and contribution processes.
-
Translate enterprise CMD+R design-system standards into practical platform-specific guidance.
-
Partner with designers and engineers on components, design tokens, accessibility, implementation feasibility, and handoffs.
-
Support CI/CD, release, versioning, dependency, and documentation workflows for design-system assets.
-
Maintain documentation using tools such as Storybook and Zeroheight and provide training/workshops.
-
Conduct design-system, accessibility, code, documentation, and adoption audits and use findings to drive improvements.
-
Serve as a cross-functional leader who can identify technical/process gaps and drive adoption without owning the entire enterprise design system.
