Responsibilities
The Assistant Chief Engineer serves as the operational and maintenance leader for the Franklin Heating Station District Energy System and functions as the designated second-in-command to the Chief Engineer. The Assistant Chief Engineer is responsible for the safe, reliable, efficient, and compliant operation of central utility generation and distribution systems including high-pressure steam, electrical generation, chilled water production, compressed air, fuel systems, and associated utility infrastructure supporting Mayo Clinic's critical access hospitals, research facilities, and campus operations.
The Assistant Chief Engineer provides day-to-day leadership for operations, maintenance, workforce development, reliability programs, contractor management, and regulatory compliance activities. The position serves as Acting Chief Engineer during the absence of the Chief Engineer and is expected to develop the leadership, financial, operational, and strategic competencies necessary to assume future Chief Engineer responsibilities.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent. Associates or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Business Administration, Industrial Technology, or related field. Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in power plant, district energy, utility production, or industrial process operations. Minimum of three (3) years of leadership or supervisory experience. Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining high-pressure boilers, steam turbines, chilled water plants, electrical generation systems, utility distribution systems, thermal energy networks, geothermal systems, microgrids, plant automation and control systems. Demonstrated ability to lead personnel, manage priorities, and make critical operational decisions during emergency situations. Experience in healthcare utility operations preferred. Experience with CMMS systems, reliability-centered maintenance, predictive maintenance technologies, and operational analytics preferred. Experience managing operating and maintenance budgets, and leading capital improvement or infrastructure replacement projects preferred. Minnesota Chief A Stationary Engineer License with a minimum of 10,000 hours of qualifying experience. EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification. . Minnesota Maintenance Electrician License preferred. Valid driver's license is required.
