Job Description
Strengthening and empowering all of the communities we serve.
Statewide High School Sports Creator
MassLive, the largest news and information website in Massachusetts, is looking for a high school sports social-first creator to help lead an expansion that builds on our outstanding team and coverage as MassLive becomes a truly statewide authority in high school sports.
This is a creator-first role for a personality-driven storyteller who can find and tell original stories across Massachusetts, take fans into spaces they have never been and bring the people, programs, rivalries and traditions that define high school sports to audiences across the state. You'll have the freedom to develop your own voice, formats and recurring franchises while working with an established newsroom and a large statewide audience.
You'll play a leading role in helping build Massachusetts' premier statewide high school sports brand and defining how high school sports are covered and experienced across social, video and live platforms.
We are looking for someone who can work alongside our High School Sports Editor and collaborate with our statewide high school sports team and social team. The ideal candidate will be an engaging on-camera presence who understands how to spark conversation, build community and grow a loyal audience, with a particular focus on reaching the next generation of high school sports fans and athletes.
The creator will develop original concepts and take ownership of projects from idea through publication. The role includes reporting and writing across the state, including rankings, all-state teams, lists, polls, breaking news, enterprise reporting and feature stories.
What you’ll be doing:
Research, pitch, report, shoot, script, edit and publish compelling short-form videos and social-first stories.
Appear on camera for live streams, Game of the Week coverage, interviews, social media-first reporting and recurring shows.
Develop original concepts that showcase the athletes, teams, rivalries and communities that make Massachusetts high school sports distinctive.
Produce text-on-screen explainers, interviews, features, live coverage and other platform-native formats.
Publish content using best practices for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook and emerging social platforms.
Build audience engagement by starting conversations, earning trust and growing community over time.
Work quickly and independently to produce timely content from games, events and breaking news situations.
Contribute reporting and writing to MassLive’s broader statewide high school sports coverage strategy.
This position pays between $48,000 and $55,000 annually.
Ideal candidate will have the following:
-
A degree in journalism, communication, digital media or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
-
Minimum of two years of experience in journalism, video, social media or digital content creation. Experience does not need to come from a traditional newsroom, but candidates must demonstrate strong news judgment and storytelling ability.
-
Demonstrated experience creating and publishing compelling video for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube or similar platforms.
-
Experience growing a social media audience by building engagement, starting conversations and earning trust.
-
Strong knowledge of Massachusetts high school sports, or the ability to quickly build trusted relationships with coaches, athletes, families and school communities across the state.
-
Ability to write clean, concise scripts and produce content in a fast-paced environment.
-
Experience with editing tools such as CapCut, Instagram Edits, Adobe Premiere or similar platforms.
-
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects under deadline pressure.
-
Solid understanding of news writing, reporting, journalistic ethics and story structure.
-
Ability to leverage relationships with sources to deliver content that differentiates MassLive from competitors.
-
Must be able to work nights and some weekends.
-
Strong audio recording abilities are a plus.
-
Bilingual and multilingual language skills are a plus.
Share samples of your best work, a portfolio or a list of story and video links when you apply.
This job requires reliable transportation to meet with sources, cover events and respond to breaking news throughout Massachusetts.
