Full job description

The Transition Assistance Advisor (TAA) serves as the primary statewide coordinator and advocate for transitioning South Carolina National Guard (SCNG) Service Members, Reserve Component members, Veterans, and their families. Operating within the J9 Service Member and Family Care Directorate, the TAA bridges the gap between military service and civilian life. The TAA provides comprehensive benefits navigation, advocacy, and referral services, ensuring that eligible individuals successfully access the full range of Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), state, and community-based entitlements and resources. Possess, at a minimum, an associate’s degree or equivalent life/work experience in a related field (Veterans Administration, Social Services, Human Resources, Employment Services). Two or more years of professional experience in program coordination, case management, social services, veteran advocacy, military family programs, or human resources. Deep understanding of National Guard and Reserve Component structures, culture, terminology, and the unique challenges faced by geographically dispersed service members, veterans, and their families. Possess military experience with broad knowledge, experience, and skills in the areas of military personnel and human resources, especially as they relate to balancing civilian life with military service. Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and knowledge of operations, regulations, policies and SOPs of National Guard, Veteran’s Affairs, Veterans Service Organizations, state and federal Veteran programs. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while strictly adhering to federal privacy regulations (HIPAA, PII, and the Privacy Act of 1974). Possess knowledge of benefits available to Veterans and dependents to include processes required to access benefits. Be proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and professional case management database/tracking software. Be able to work with Commanders’ and senior leadership from their units to assess and enroll Guard Member and their family members into benefits programs. Be able to contact Service Members and Family Members as frequently as is necessary until such a time as the SCNG Guard Member or Family Member receives their available benefits. Be able to interact professionally with all Service and Family Members, community stakeholders, and Federal, State and local Veteran Organizations. Be able to interface with all external organizations as required to meet all stated performance objectives. Be able to maintain specific records to document the performance of the Transition Assistance Program. Ability to perform duties in a professional office environment in the Anderson/Greenville areas. Be able to travel on a regular basis in assigned region to perform his or her stated duties. Flexibility, at times, to perform duties on the weekend or evenings to support Yellow Ribbon Reintegration (YRRP) events, Pre/Post Deployment events, unit’s drill weekend or Annual Training, and community partners events. Be able to conduct training, and provide oral presentations to various size groups. Be able to always perform duties in a professional manner. Have a current and valid driver’s license. Be able to deliver all the stated objectives and goals set forth by the SCNG J9 Director under the scope of the statement of work.
