About the RoleCell Press launched the journal Device in 2023 as a home for applied research that supports tomorrow's cutting-edge technology. The disciplines and expertise needed to build devices that positively impact human lives are diverse, and as such, Device has rapidly become established for very impactful research across applied physics, computer science, chemistry, biology, engineering, and more as it applies to driving integrated, purpose-driven applications.

We are now recruiting an Editor in Chief to lead Device through its next chapter. The role provides a unique opportunity to continue to develop and shape the journal, leading the editorial team according to their creative vision. As a respected member of the research community in the journal's scope, the Editor-in-Chief will ensure Device continues to develop as a very influential journal grounded in a strong understanding of the needs of the global authors, readers, and reviewers that the journal serves.

This is a full-time editorial position. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. There are strong advantages in candidates willing and able to be based in proximity to one our offices (in Boston MA, New York or Philadelphia USA; London or Oxford UK; Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Munich, Germany; Beijing, Shanghai or Shenzhen, China); we are able to offer some flexibility in location. If hired in the UK, this role is included in the pay bargaining unit represented by the National Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Responsibilities

  • Continuing the shape the aims, scope, priorities and formats for the journal to ensure it remains impactful, topical, cohesive and of broad appeal.

  • Having managerial responsibilities for the in-house editorial team, and coordinating the rigorous evaluation of submissions to ensure the quality and value of the journal as a forum for the best research, analysis and ideas.

  • Drawing on an impressive global network of leading researchers to attract world-leading article submissions.

  • Traveling extensively to engage with the global research community and build networks, including through attending conferences and visiting research institutes.

  • Developing and fostering partnerships with other editorial teams at Cell Press, as well as members of our Operations, Marketing and Press teams. Contributing to the overall publishing strategy of Cell Press.

Requirements

  • Have proven research expertise and a broad interest in research across the scope of Device.

  • Have a deep network of international researchers within the scope of the journal, paired with a proven ability to engage with and influence.

  • Able to think conceptually and critically about a wide range of scientific issues.

  • Have proven organizational, project management, leadership, and teamwork skills.

  • Display excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Extensive Editorial experience is valued. Interested applicants with a current academic assignment but are seeking new challenges in Editorial/Publishing are also encouraged to apply.

U.S. National Base Pay Range: $95,300 - $158,800. Geographic differentials may apply in some locations to better reflect local market rates.

If performed in New York City, the base pay range is $114,300 - $190,500.

This job is eligible for an annual incentive bonus.

If performed in any of the following locations: DEU Home Based – Frankfurt; Germany – Frankfurt (Baseler Platz); Germany – Munich; Home Based – Bavaria; Home Based – Hamburg; Home Based – Hesse; Home Based – Munich; or Home Based – Saarland, the base pay range is €75,200 - €125,500.

If performed in NLD Amsterdam (Radarweg), the base pay range is €79,000 - €131,500.

This job may be subject to a collective labor agreement in the Netherlands. Please consult with the hiring team for further details.
