Job Summary:

To collect, access and process specimens according to policy, under the direction and supervision of the Laboratory.

Accountabilities :

    1. Collects appropriate blood specimens according to Specimen Collection Manual and Reference Laboratory Manuals.
  • a. Properly identify all patients prior to phlebotomy.

  • b. Successfully perform venipuncture, capillary collections and blood culture collections on patients according to age specific criteria.

  • c. Correct sample tubes are selected, and the correct order of draw is followed for all phlebotomy collections

  • d. Know the proper labeling requirements for all laboratory samples.

  • e. Demonstrates cost accountability in the use of supplies and equipment.

  • f. Correctly utilizes Mobilab.

    1. Accessions all samples delivered to the Laboratory.
  • a. Cross-check Laboratory referrals with computer orders to ensure ordering accuracy.

  • b. Combine laboratory test orders to prevent duplicate testing.

  • c. Identify requisition and sample issues. Notify physician’s office, nursing homes etc. to correct or seek assistance to resolve issue.

  • d. Successfully receive samples into the hospital information system.

  • e. Process and deliver all laboratory samples to the correct sections.

  • f. Expedite STAT samples to ensure conformance with established TAT.

    1. Provides quality customer service.
  • a. Respond to customer needs with respect and professionalism.

  • b. Use the telephone in a professional manner.

  • c. Comply with hospital and laboratory dress code

  • d. Prioritize work and efficiently expedite workload.

  • e. Work is accurate, neat, and completed in a timely fashion.

  • f. Associate remains well organized and can exercise independent judgment to resolve customer service issues and/or seeks assistance to resolve.

    1. Cross trains in other non-phlebotomy skills to help out in the Laboratory. Goes to Outreach Facilities to collect or pick up Laboratory specimens
  • a. Assists in other areas of the laboratory as assigned. (Cyto, Micro, Histo, Office)

  • b. Complies with needed services at Outreach Facilities.

  • c. Consistently performs as a self-starter without reminders to complete duties.

  • d. Cooperate with and take initiative to assist coworkers in completing work.

  • e. Demonstrate responsibility for containment of hospital costs by conservation of hospital supplies, equipment and time. Notify supervisor when supplies are running low.

    1. Promotes patient safety by compliance with Organizational/Departmental policies and procedures.
  • a. Maintains confidentiality of customers and associates at all times.

  • b. Timely completion of mandatory job requirements:

  • CPR and RAHE

  • Yearly competencies

  • Fire safety/Safety CE

  • FIT testing

  • Background clearance and fingerprinting

  • Continual education.

  • c. Keeps abreast of changes and exhibits a supportive attitude.

  • d. Keeps abreast of and complies with contents in Laboratory Manual, DH Associate Manual, Infection Control Manual, Chemical/Safety Hygiene Manual, Computer and each Departmental Policy and Procedure Manuals.

  • e. Associate is able to admit errors and accepts responsibility for actions.

  • f. Communicate, consult and share pertinent information with coworkers and supervisors according to established channels and lines of authority

  • g. Associate actively participates in and supports departmental and organizational Performance Improvement Initiatives.

  • h. Associate complies with dress code of department.

  • i. Utilizes equipment properly in order to maintain a safe environment at all times for patients and associates.

  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures

  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

Qualifications:

  • H.S Diploma/ GED Required

  • Phlebotomy experience preferred

Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications:

  • Certified in BLS for healthcare providers required

  • Driver’s license, vehicle in good operating condition and proof of adequate automobile insurance
