Position Summary

The Senior Software Test Engineer advances the verification, validation, and quality of embedded software and autonomous robotic systems used on Tennant cleaning equipment. This hands-on technical role develops scalable automated test solutions, test infrastructure, and verification strategies that build confidence in software maturity throughout the product development lifecycle.

The engineer collaborates with Software, Systems, Controls, Electrical, Machine Integration, and Test Engineering teams to verify embedded software, integrated electro-mechanical systems, machine behaviors, communications, safety functions, and machine-level performance.

Key Responsibilities

Test Planning & Coverage

  • Define comprehensive software test strategies that verify requirements for functional, performance, reliability, fault-handling, and failure-mode scenarios across normal and abnormal operating conditions.

  • Translate system requirements, user stories, and defect reports or lessons learned into executable test cases that include test scenarios, procedures, and acceptance criteria

  • Identify test coverage gaps and develop plans to close them.

  • Maintain traceability among requirements, test cases, results, and defects

  • Influence product and software architecture to enable improved testability, diagnosability, safety, and robustness.

Test Automation Development and Infrastructure

  • Design, develop, and maintain automated test frameworks, test harnesses, reusable libraries, fixtures, and utilities.

  • Validate end-to-end integration and interoperability of software, firmware, hardware, communications networks, simulated subsystems, and machine-level functions within automated system-level HIL (Hardware-in-Loop) test platforms

  • Develop and debug C# test scripts for embedded controllers, robotic behaviors, communications, fault handling, and machine functions.

  • Develop automated fault injection tests to evaluate software resilience.

  • Develop fault-injection and negative-test methods to evaluate fault detection, recovery, and fail-safe behavior.

  • Integrate automated testing, reporting, and quality gates into CI/CD and software release workflows.

Test Execution, Analysis, & Software Quality Assurance

  • Establish metrics for test coverage, pass rates, defect trends, reliability, and release readiness.

  • Evaluate AI-assisted tools for test generation, coverage-gap detection, debugging, and data analysis.

  • Execute automated and manual tests across software configurations and product releases.

  • Verify fault detection, fault handling, recovery behavior, and system safety functions.

  • Validate communications, controller states, and machine response during abnormal operating conditions.

  • Analyze test data and logs to identify trends, isolate failures, and determine root causes in collaboration with software developers and system engineers.

  • Document defects with clear evidence, reproduction steps, risk assessments, and recommended actions.

  • Troubleshoot issues across embedded software, networking, hardware integration, and automation systems.

  • Expand & Execute automated regression coverage across multiple software releases.

  • Present testing results and quality assessments to engineering leadership and project teams.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • 6+ years of experience in software testing, test automation, verification, integration, or embedded systems development.

  • Experience developing and maintaining automated system-level HIL test platforms, simulation environments, fault-injection frameworks, and CI/CD-integrated automated test solutions for complex embedded or electromechanical systems.

  • Strong C# programming, test scripting, debugging, and software design skills.

  • Experience testing embedded software and integrated hardware/software systems.

  • Experience working with CAN and CANopen communication networks, including configuration, monitoring, diagnostics, fault analysis, and validation of communications between embedded controllers, motor drives, sensors, actuators, and test systems.

  • Hands-on electrical aptitude and practical experience building, wiring, instrumenting, and debugging test fixtures for software-controlled electromechanical systems using schematics, diagnostic tools, sensors, actuators, controllers, and communication interfaces.

  • Experience with source control, defect management, and workflow tools such as Bitbucket, Azure DevOps, & Jira.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with autonomous mobile robots, industrial robotics, mobile equipment, or vehicle control systems.

  • Experience developing, debugging, and maintaining C#/.NET PC-based backend applications that control test equipment, automate test execution, interface with embedded systems and instrumentation, manage test data, and generate test results.

  • Experience with Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) tools and practices, including automated builds, regression testing, test orchestration, artifact management, and quality gate enforcement.

  • Experience developing and executing Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) test solutions for autonomous, robotic, or embedded systems, including simulation of controllers, sensors, actuators, communication networks, and machine behaviors to validate software functionality, fault handling, and system performance prior to hardware integration

  • Experience applying systems engineering principles to software verification of embedded or robotic products, including requirements traceability to test cases, risk-based testing, functional safety considerations, and support of product release readiness activities.

  • Experience with AI-assisted Testing & Development including abilities to:

    • Implement and scale AI-assisted test case generation from product requirements, user stories, and production data
  • Build workflows for automated test creation, prioritization, and gap detection using AI
