Full job description

Position Summary

Hunt Forest Products is seeking a motivated and knowledgeable Forester to assist in the management, conservation, harvesting, and procurement of timber resources. This position works both independently and as part of a team to support sustainable forestry practices, logging operations, timber procurement activities, and contractor development initiatives.

The Forester will coordinate closely with logging contractors, landowners, internal operations personnel, and land management representatives to ensure safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible forestry operations while maximizing product utilization and maintaining compliance with applicable forestry best management practices (BMPs).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Logging Operations Oversight

  • Oversee daily logging operations and monitor progress of active harvesting activities.

  • Coordinate required One Call notifications.

  • Obtain road permits as required for harvesting and transportation activities.

  • Secure and maintain necessary tickets and documentation associated with logging operations.

  • Flag harvest boundaries and operational areas as needed.

  • Maximize product utilization across harvest operations.

  • Oversee implementation of Louisiana Best Management Practices (BMPs).

  • Communicate operational status and progress updates to supervision.

  • Coordinate with Land Management personnel when harvesting on company-owned lands.

Timber Sale Evaluation

  • Inspect prospective timber sales.

  • Evaluate tract accessibility and operability.

  • Assess timber quality and value.

  • Analyze product mix opportunities.

  • Determine overall logging feasibility and tract potential.

Forest Management and Procurement Support

  • Cruise potential timber sales.

  • Assist in tract pricing activities.

  • Support the recruitment and development of new delivered wood contractors.

  • Contribute to sustainable forest management initiatives.

Knowledge and Skills

Qualified candidates should possess:

  • Knowledge of hardwood and pine inventory techniques.

  • Ability to navigate using maps, compass, and GPS technology.

  • Familiarity with regional tree species and forest products.

  • Strong problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Excel.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Strong, professional communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in both field and office environments.

  • Customer and people-oriented approach.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.

Education and Experience Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Forestry is required.

  • Previous forestry field experience preferred.

  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record required for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with timber procurement, logging operations, or forest management programs.

  • Knowledge of Louisiana forestry practices and regulations.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • Ability to travel regularly to timber tracts, logging sites, and forest lands.

  • Ability to walk uneven terrain, wooded areas, and active logging sites.

  • Ability to safely operate a vehicle on paved and unpaved roads.
