Full job description

Bring your clinical judgment, compassion, and infusion expertise to a role where every assessment, treatment, and patient interaction can make a meaningful difference .

Join Cancer Care Pantops as an Infusion RN caring for both oncology and non-oncology patients in a specialized ambulatory environment. This opportunity offers the clinical complexity experienced nurses value, along with predictable nine-hour shifts, limited weekend and holiday commitments, and a team that prioritizes safety, communication, and professional growth .

Full-time positions are 0.9 FTE, and part-time positions are 0.5 FTE. Nine-hour shifts are generally scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or 7:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Team members typically work every eighth weekend at the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with one holiday commitment annually. The center is closed on Christmas Day and Thanksgiving Day.

The Role

As an Infusion RN, you will provide direct care to patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, biologics, blood products, hydration, and other supportive treatments. The patient population includes individuals with cancer as well as patients managing conditions such as anemia, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and rheumatoid disease.

This is a higher-acuity ambulatory setting that allows you to retain and expand your inpatient-level assessment skills while achieving a more sustainable work-life rhythm . Your day will combine independent clinical decision-making with close collaboration among oncologists, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, laboratory professionals, and fellow nurses.

In this role, you will:

  • Complete head-to-toe and focused assessments, evaluate symptoms, and identify treatment-related complications.

  • Review laboratory results, medications, treatment parameters, consents, allergies, and required premedications.

  • Access and de-access implanted ports, initiate peripheral IVs, and maintain PICCs and other central venous access devices.

  • Administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, blood products, hydration, electrolytes, and supportive medications.

  • Closely monitor patients for infusion reactions, hypersensitivity, anaphylaxis, extravasation, and other acute changes.

  • Apply strong pattern recognition and clinical judgment to stop or modify infusions and initiate emergency interventions when indicated.

  • Manage treatment-related symptoms such as nausea, pain, fatigue, neuropathy, mucositis, and gastrointestinal complications.

  • Educate patients and families about treatment, side effects, infection precautions, symptom management, and when to contact the oncology team.

  • Coordinate treatment changes or delays based on laboratory values, symptoms, and provider direction.

  • Document assessments, treatment administration, patient response, education, interventions, and discharge status.

  • Participate in quality improvement, safety reporting, and continuing oncology education.

A typical workflow includes receiving handoff, assessing the patient, reviewing labs and orders, verifying treatment, obtaining vascular access, administering premedications and therapy, monitoring closely, managing symptoms or reactions, providing education, documenting care, and coordinating discharge and follow-up.

Why UVA Health

At UVA Health, oncology nurses work alongside experts advancing cancer detection, treatment, patient care, clinical research, and immunotherapy. This role offers the opportunity to build specialized expertise within an academic health system while delivering highly personal care to patients navigating complex and often life-changing diagnoses.

Cancer Care Pantops brings oncology and non-oncology infusion services together on a newer floor that opened in August 2025 . The result is a clinically diverse setting that rewards adaptability, precise assessment, and strong interdisciplinary communication.

You will benefit from:

  • Experienced, visible nursing leadership with infusion and charge nurse backgrounds. Nurse managers and assistant nurse managers maintain their clinical competencies and assist on the floor when needed.

  • A team-oriented, caring, honest, and transparent culture where safety and communication are shared priorities.

  • Support for chemotherapy certification, specialty certification, continued education, and nursing school.

  • Opportunities to become involved in professional governance and unit-based improvement initiatives.

  • A structured path toward independent practice, chemotherapy competency, and broader team involvement.

  • Minimal weekend and holiday commitments compared with many inpatient nursing roles .

  • The opportunity to maintain high-acuity clinical skills within a schedule designed to support greater work-life balance.

  • The professional environment of a Magnet-recognized academic health system with a clinical career ladder, nursing research, quality improvement work, and professional governance.

  • Relocation assistance may be available for qualified candidates.

This is a rewarding opportunity for a compassionate, team-oriented RN who values meaningful patient relationships, specialized clinical practice, and the ability to remain fully engaged in complex care without a traditional inpatient schedule.
