Full job description

At the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), we plan, build, maintain, and protect the transportation systems that connect communities, support commerce, and keep Louisiana moving. DOTD is seeking a Materials and Testing Engineer to support transportation projects and programs through materials evaluation, materials testing, geotechnical exploration, quality assurance, specification development, and technical support for transportation projects. This position supports the development, delivery, maintenance, or improvement of transportation infrastructure by applying engineering principles, conducting technical analysis, coordinating projects, and conducting compliance-related reviews. No prior engineering experience is required — training is provided, with opportunities for career progression and advancement through the Engineering job series. Positions are located in Bossier City and report to Lab Engineer. This vacancy is being advertised under two separate postings: Engineer Intern 1–2 and Engineer 3–5. Possession of a current Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.

NOTE: Applications will be accepted from persons who possess a current Engineer Intern Certificate in states other than Louisiana. However, the applicant will be required to obtain a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate prior to appointment. The hiring agency will verify that all requirements are met.

Licensing requirements may be viewed at www.lapels.com.The official job specifications for this role, as defined by the State Civil Service, can be found here.Job Duties:• Performs or reviews materials testing, materials evaluation, or quality assurance activities for transportation projects.

  • Supports geotechnical exploration, laboratory testing, pavement testing, or construction materials review.
  • Prepares, reviews, or analyzes test results, technical reports, specifications, or materials documentation.
  • Evaluates materials, pavement, geotechnical, or construction-related data for compliance with DOTD standards.
  • Coordinates with DOTD project teams, districts, laboratories, consultants, contractors, or external partners.
  • Supports development or review of materials specifications, testing procedures, or quality assurance processes.
  • Uses laboratory, field, or technical tools to support materials evaluation and engineering recommendations.
  • Provides technical assistance related to materials, pavement, geotechnical, or quality assurance issues.

Position-Specific Details:Career Progression: This position is part of a Career Progression Group and may be filled as an Engineer Intern 1 or Engineer Intern 2. Compensation: The following reflects the beginning biweekly salary for each level. A Special Entrance Rate (SER) may apply to qualifying positions.

  • Engineer Intern 1 – SER at $2,692.80 biweekly
  • Engineer Intern 2 – SER at $2,881.60 biweekly

Appointment Type: This position may be filled as a job appointment or probational appointment. A job appointment is a temporary appointment that may last up to 36 months. If filled as a job appointment, the position may be converted to a probational appointment in the future. Upcoming Graduates: Applications will be accepted from applicants who are within 90 days of graduation. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon verification and confirmation that the applicant has received a qualifying degree. If selected, the applicant will be eligible to begin work the day after graduation. The selected candidate will be required to submit an official transcript confirming graduation within 60 days of hire.
