Position Description

TheSchool of Music (https://www.music.txst.edu/) at Texas State University seeks an engaging, creative, collaborative, and dedicated educator to serve as a non-tenure-track, assistant professor of instruction of Music Education (Student Teaching Coordinator).

The successful candidate will provide leadership in two primary areas: music education and coordination of the music student teaching program. The position is designed as a balanced assignment (50% administrative/50% instructional) that supports both the preparation of future music educators and the successful administration and supervision of student teaching experiences across all specialization areas.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Coordinate the music student/clinical teaching program, including managing student/clinical teaching placements, communicating with the College of Education, collaborating with cooperating teachers and university supervisors, organizing seminars, and overseeing program policies, procedures, and assessment processes.

  • Teach undergraduate courses in music education in area of specialization (courses may include Marching Band Techniques, Instrumental Performance Literature, Instrumental Arranging, Music Teaching in various Classroom Contexts, or Foundations of Music Education).

  • Supervise and mentor student/clinical teachers in field placements.

  • Participate in recruitment, retention, accreditation, and assessment efforts within the Music Education area and the School of Music.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of the School of Music.

The university seeks candidates whose professional backgrounds include strong organizational skills, a history of effective communication, dedication to an effective team, and a willingness to be part of a university community.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Music Education or a closely related field.

  • Minimum of three years of successful EC-12 teaching experience.

  • Demonstrated expertise in music education and music program organization.

  • Demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with student/clinical teachers, the College of Education, and cooperating teachers.

  • Experience working effectively and collaboratively with a variety of individuals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Music Education or a closely related field.

  • Experience teaching instrumental music education courses at the collegiate level.

  • Experience coordinating, supervising, or mentoring student/clinical teachers, interns, or early-career music educators.

  • Experience leading student/clinical teaching seminars or overseeing field-based teacher preparation experiences.

  • Demonstrated excellence in music program organization and development.

  • Proven record of mentorship and supervision of university music education students.

  • Proven record of program management and/or organization at the collegiate level or equivalency.
