Full job description
The Lauder Institute (https://lauder.wharton.upenn.edu/) and the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) (https://www.sas.upenn.edu/) at the University of Pennsylvania (https://www.upenn.edu/) invite applications for a full-time appointment as a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer and Faculty Director, International Studies. This position combines graduate-level teaching with year-round academic leadership and administrative responsibilities for the core curriculum of the Masters of Arts (MA) degree in international studies.
The Lauder Institute offers a distinctive model of graduate education (https://lauder.wharton.upenn.edu/curriculum/) that combines the analytical rigor of the School of Arts and Sciences with advanced language training, deep cultural and regional expertise, and their application to complex global business challenges; students receive a joint MBA-MA in two years. Lauder students develop the ability to analyze international markets, political and economic developments, and cross-cultural environments through interdisciplinary coursework that bridges the social sciences, humanities, and international business alongside language training. A hallmark of the program is its regional immersion model, which provides students with opportunities for intensive international travel experiences that connect classroom learning with direct engagement with business leaders, policymakers, alumni, and local communities around the world.
The Faculty Director will join the senior leadership team at the Institute and teach international studies (INTS) courses that bring the analytical rigor of the School of Arts and Sciences to contemporary global business questions through interdisciplinary perspectives such as comparative politics, political economy, economic history, and regional studies. The successful candidate will be an intellectually engaged scholar and educator whose research and teaching illuminate the intersection of global business, politics, economics, culture, and society. In addition to teaching, the Faculty Director will serve as the principal academic and administrative leader of the international studies core curriculum, overseeing its development, delivery, assessment, and continuous improvement. Working closely with Institute leadership and faculty, the Faculty Director will ensure coherence across coursework, regional programming, experiential learning opportunities, and the master's thesis, while helping to develop curricular innovations that reflect Lauder's distinctive integration of language training, cultural fluency, and business education.
Appointment as a full-time Lecturer is for a period of one year with possibility of renewal for up to two additional years contingent on satisfactory performance review and Dean’s approval, and a fourth year, pending Provost’s approval. Consideration for appointment as a Senior Lecturer requires four years of service as a full-time Lecturer at Penn or current status as a Penn Senior Lecturer, as well as the standard processes and approvals for appointment in a receptive home department within the School of Arts and Sciences. Appointment as Senior Lecturer is for a four-year term, with renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance reviews and University approval. The position combines an MA teaching load based on the teaching needs of the Institute with year-round academic leadership and administrative responsibilities for the Institute's international studies curriculum and programming. The salary is competitive.
Minimum qualifications include: (1) a doctorate in a relevant field such as international affairs, area studies, business, economics, political science, public policy, or a related discipline; (2) international, regional, and linguistic expertise that contributes to the Institute's mission of developing global business leaders; (3) demonstrated excellence in graduate-level teaching; (4) the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a wide range of stakeholders; and (5) willingness and availability to travel internationally for Lauder immersive student experiences potentially during academic year and summer for periods of 2 to 6 weeks at a time. Additional desirable qualifications include: (1) experience organizing, administering, and leading international programs, including experiential and immersion-based learning opportunities; (2) interest and experience in managing complex academic initiatives and curricula; (3) an active research agenda that engages global business questions through the analytical frameworks of the social sciences and humanities, with quantitative research methodologies preferred; and (4) ability to engage effectively with students, faculty, alumni, corporate partners, government officials, and other external stakeholders. (5) Candidates whose scholarship, teaching, or professional experience focuses on the Middle East are particularly encouraged to apply.
Candidates are to apply at apply.interfolio.com/194895 . Include (1) a cover letter, (2) CV, (3) two sample course syllabi and teaching evaluations from the previous three years, (4) a brief statement (maximum 2,000 words) describing your approach to interdisciplinary teaching and curricular leadership at the intersection of international studies and global business, and (5) names and contact information for three individuals who have agreed to provide a letter of recommendation.
Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
