Title and Summary

Manager, Software Engineering

Overview:

The Marketing Services team is seeking a Manager, Software Engineering to provide technical and people leadership for a multidisciplinary engineering team. This role will partner closely with product and technology stakeholders to deliver scalable, reusable and user-focused platform capabilities, with an emphasis on engineering quality, efficient execution and on-time delivery.

The ideal candidate combines a strong Java and software engineering foundation with proven people-management experience. You will lead a distributed team of software, user interface, data engineering and data science professionals while remaining close enough to the technology to review solutions, challenge estimates and guide architecture and delivery decisions.

Role:

  • Lead, coach and develop a team of approximately 6–8 engineers across front-end, back-end, data engineering and data science disciplines, including performance management, career development and difficult performance conversations when required.

  • Provide technical leadership and ownership for the architecture, design and delivery of new platform capabilities.

  • Partner closely with product management and other stakeholders to translate business needs into clear technical requirements and delivery plans.

  • Remain hands-on as needed by contributing code, reviewing engineering work and constructively challenging technical approaches, estimates and trade-offs.

  • Design and develop RESTful APIs, microservices and backend services using Java, Spring Boot and related technologies.

  • Guide the development of highly available, scalable, reusable and fault-tolerant solutions across user interface, application, data and integration layers.

  • Assess technologies and approaches for connecting backend data services with modern user experiences.

  • Promote strong engineering practices across system design, architecture, CI/CD, automated testing, code quality, security, reliability and production readiness.

  • Lead or contribute to proofs of concept and broader technical initiatives, including the evaluation of technologies, frameworks, methodologies and vendor solutions.

  • Work across geographically distributed teams and communicate technical solutions and architecture clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

All About You:

  • Proven people-management experience, including performance reviews, career development, coaching and navigating performance improvement plans or other difficult performance conversations.

  • Strong software engineering foundation with hands-on experience in Java, Spring Boot, microservices and RESTful APIs.

  • Ability to review code and designs, assess technical estimates and provide credible guidance to experienced engineers.

Strong understanding of system design and architecture for large, complex and distributed platforms.

  • Experience with modern web development technologies such as React or Angular, Node.js, GraphQL or comparable frameworks and tools.

  • Understanding of domain-driven design, event-driven architecture and integration patterns.

  • Experience with CI/CD practices and tools such as Jenkins, along with automated testing using JUnit, Mockito and behavior-driven development frameworks.

  • Strong ownership mindset with the ability to connect people leadership, technical quality and delivery outcomes.

  • Demonstrated focus on scalability, reusability, usability and attention to detail.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to explain technical solutions and architecture to a wide range of stakeholders.

  • Experience working in Agile or Scrum environments, with the ability to adapt quickly to new technologies and changing priorities.

Preferred Experience:

  • Knowledge of data engineering and exposure to data science workflows or platforms.

  • Experience with Kubernetes, including application or platform migrations from on-premises environments to Kubernetes.

  • Exposure to generative AI and practical GenAI adoption or use cases.

  • Experience leading teams distributed across multiple locations or time zones.
