Job overview

The Schiffer electrochemical engineering laboratory at Harvard University seeks a postdoctoral fellow to design and characterize electrochemical reactors. The fellow will build electrochemical devices and investigate reactions such as nitrogen-cycle reactions and intermediate-temperature electrochemical processes. The work examines how device-scale choices, including temperature and electrolyte flow patterns, influence electrocatalyst activity. The position begins in October 2026 or soon thereafter and is for one year, renewable for up to two additional years.

Title Postdoctoral Fellow in Electrochemical Engineering for Chemical Manufacturing

School Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences

Department/Area Applied Physics

Position Description

The Schiffer electrochemical engineering laboratory at Harvard University invites applications for a postdoctoral position in electrochemical engineering reactor design and characterization, beginning in October 2026, or soon thereafter. The applicant will be working on building electrochemical devices and investigating new electrochemical reactions, such as nitrogen cycle reactions or intermediate temperature electrochemical processes. The candidate will work closely with Professor Zachary Schiffer on projects related to understanding how voltage can be used to drive processes that currently rely on large scales and severe reaction conditions. Specifically, the Schiffer lab focuses on how device-scale design decisions such as temperature and electrolyte flow patterns influence electocatalyst activity. The position is for one year, renewable for two additional years. For further information about the work in our lab, please visit schifferlab.seas.harvard.edu or contact [email protected].

Basic Qualifications

PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, engineering, physics, or similar fields by the expected start date.

Additional Qualifications

Applicants should have experience in a chemistry wet lab and ideally should have experience synthesizing catalysts such as metal oxide nanoparticles for electrochemical devices, as well as experience with electrochemistry and building electrochemical devices. A successful candidate is driven and independent, and the candidate will be responsible for helping the PI to start new projects and help mentor new graduate and undergraduate students.

Special Instructions

List of application requirements:

  • CV

  • Cover letter summarizing past work, reasons for wanting to join the lab, goals for the postdoc, and longer-term career goals.

  • Two to three letters of recommendation
