Payroll Accountant

Description We are looking for a Payroll Accountant to join a healthcare organization in Memphis, Tennessee in a contract-to-permanent capacity. This position is ideal for a meticulous accounting specialist who can manage bi-weekly payroll for a large, multi-state workforce while also supporting key reconciliation and payables activities. The role is fully onsite and offers the opportunity to step into a critical function that supports both payroll accuracy and broader financial operations.

Responsibilities:

• Administer end-to-end bi-weekly payroll for more than 660 employees, ensuring timely and accurate processing for hourly, salaried, permanent, and part-time staff across multiple states.

• Manage the payroll cycle primarily on Mondays and Tuesdays, reviewing earnings, deductions, taxes, and garnishments before finalizing each pay run.

• Maintain payroll records within ADP Workforce Now and verify employee data to support compliance and reporting accuracy.

• Reconcile payroll activity to the general ledger using Great Plains, investigating variances and resolving discrepancies promptly.

• Prepare and complete account reconciliations for balance sheet items, liabilities, insurance, bank accounts, and credit cards.

• Support accounts payable tasks and assist with accrual entries tied to payroll and related financial activity.

• Review payroll tax withholdings and help ensure income tax reporting obligations are handled correctly and on schedule.

• Analyze payroll and accounting data in Excel, using formulas and pivot tables to identify trends, exceptions, and areas requiring follow-up. Requirements • Proven experience handling full-cycle payroll for a sizable employee population.

• Background processing multi-state payroll with knowledge of payroll taxes, deductions, and garnishments.

• Hands-on experience with ADP Workforce Now.

• Strong reconciliation skills, including payroll-to-general-ledger and account reconciliation work.

• Advanced Excel capabilities, including formulas and pivot tables.

• Ability to think critically, investigate discrepancies, and solve problems independently.

• Familiarity with accounts payable, accruals, and related accounting support functions.

• Comfortable working onsite in Memphis, Tennessee in a contract role with permanent potential.
