If you would like to join a creative, collaborative, innovative team doing meaningful work, join us as a Material Specialist II, where you will be responsible for the procurement of various chemicals, supplies, equipment, parts, services, used in the maintenance and operation of the Noman M. Cole Water Recycling Facility.
This unique position splits its workday between working at a computer, purchasing goods and services as well as receiving deliveries and interacting with customers at a service window, ensuring they have everything they need to perform their duties. This position works directly in the warehouse located at the Noman M Cole Water Recycling Facility in Lorton, Virginia.
The responsibilities include:• Procuring a wide variety of chemicals, electrical, custodial, mechanical, plumbing and general hardware items utilized in pumps, drives, compressors, incinerators, filters and other process equipment items.
- Using a computer to create purchase orders and process invoices in FOCUS, the county’s SAP system.
- Using county procurement cards when appropriate.
- Maintaining inventory of replacement parts for plant equipment, building utility systems and tools for maintenance activities.
- Assisting the warehouse manager in the control of procurement, receiving, storing, and delivery of parts, equipment, chemicals and miscellaneous supplies.
- Following county procurement policy to identify appropriate vendor source
- Serving as vendor contact for discrepancies in material shortages, damages or return
- Assisting with inventory control that complies with county purchasing policies as well as audits.
- Receiving and unloading trucks, which includes using various types of equipment such as a forklift.

Wastewater Management positions are responsible for providing uninterrupted sewer service to residents during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies. This position is designated as emergency service and is subject to 24-hour on-call and may be required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; and three years of experience procuring or issuing and receiving equipment or performing accounts payable functions.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Must be able to obtain Forklift Safety Training Certificate within six months of hire.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, credit check, and a pre-employment physical examination to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:• Two years of experience working in an industrial warehouse.
- One year experience with procurement, contracts, vendor management, purchase orders, payments, and emergency purchasing.
- One year experience operating a forklift.
- One year experience using computers to process various financial transactions using FOCUS or similar SAP system.
- One year of experience using FOCUS/SAP for roles of basic and advanced shopper
- One year of computer experience, including outlook, internet research, excel, and data registries.
- One year experience with logistics, inventory systems, and material management.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to use hand tools and lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to work in a variety of work environments hot and cold weather and noisy environments. May be exposed to raw waste. Must be able to follow instructions and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Requires the ability to stand, stoop, bend, reach, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crawl, lift and manipulate materials with manual dexterity, and work in strenuous and uncomfortable positions for long periods of time. The ability to climb stairs and walk around a large wastewater treatment plant. The ability to drive a county vehicle. Visual acuity and manual dexterity to operate computers and office machines. This requires the ability to operate keyboard driven equipment and to use other automated technology to input, access, and retrieve information. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
