Job Description

Director of Lab Strategy & Operations, AI Governance Lab

Stanford Law School

Fixed-Term through June 30, 2027

Part-time 50% FTE

Budgeted Salary Range Upon Hire at the Law School: $71,146.50-$95,000 annual base salary.

About the AI Governance Lab: (https://aigovlab.stanford.edu/)

The AI Governance Lab is co-directed by Rob Reich, McGregor-Girand Professor of Social Ethics of Science and Technology, and Nathaniel Persily, James B. McClatchy Professor of Law.

The Lab will focus on developing the institutional framework needed for the AI transition, studying how law, policy, and institutions can adapt to rapidly advancing artificial intelligence and what changes will be required in the early years before a post-AGI society emerges. Its work is interdisciplinary, drawing on political science, philosophy, law, computer science, and policy. Training is central to the lab's mission: students, predoctoral scholars, and postdoctoral scholars lead their own projects under close mentorship, supported by research funding, weekly lab meetings, and collaboration across the team.

Our five-lane framework includes:

  1. Incremental Policy Change

  2. Post-AI-Disaster Policy Making

  3. Structural Reform and Industrial Policy

  4. Radical Proposals

  5. Post-AGI Policy Landscape

About the Role:

The Director will work closely with the faculty Co-directors to shape the lab’s operational strategy. In this role, you will be expected to hire, supervise, and mentor policy fellows, focus on the lab’s external presence, and develop our organizational infrastructure and operations strategy. You will develop and implement a podcast and salon convenings as part of the lab’s activities. This role will lead all efforts to develop and execute a policy portfolio conference in spring 2027, convening academics, policymakers, staff, technologists, labor and community organizers, and journalists with an end goal following the conference of assigned draft proposals and authors.
