Full job description

Boston College Introduction

Founded in 1863, Boston College is a Jesuit, Catholic university located six miles from downtown Boston with an enrollment of 9,654 full-time undergraduates and 5,072 graduate and professional students. Ranked 37 among national universities, Boston College has 923 full-time and 1,336 FTE faculty, 2,822 non-faculty employees, an operating budget of $1.4 billion, and an endowment in excess of $3.9 billion.

Job Description

Job Title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Department: Engineering

Employment Type: Onsite | Temporary | Full-Time (35 hours per week)

FTE Range: $67,000 - $76,962, based on experience.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to lead projects in drug delivery and plant-based scaffolds for tissue engineering. Our lab is interested in (1) developing stimuli-responsive drug carriers for cancer and tissue engineering applications and (2) engineering the degradation of plant-based scaffolds for hard tissue engineering, as humans lack the enzymes to break down lignocellulosic plant structures during tissue regeneration. For this research, we utilize drug delivery, plant decellularization, tissue engineering, medical imaging (ultrasound and micro-CT), and AI/machine learning approaches.

The successful candidate will lead project design, coordination, and experimental execution, providing leadership in project direction. There will be opportunities to work closely with and mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers. The Fellow will also have career development opportunities, including support for conference travel, grant writing, and mentorship from multidisciplinary faculty involved in the projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Planning, designing, and conducting experiments

  • Analyzing and interpreting data in the context of project goals

  • Maintaining reproducible, well-documented experimental protocols and analysis pipelines

  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams

  • Contributing to manuscript preparation, conference presentations, proposal development, and publication of high-quality research papers

  • Managing inventory for reagents and consumables

  • Mentoring undergraduate, graduate, and other research assistants

This is a full-time, one-year appointment, renewable for additional years based on performance and funding availability. We are looking to fill this position as soon as possible but will remain flexible on the specific start date for the right candidate.

To apply for this position, please submit the following: a cover letter outlining research interests and fit for the position, a CV, and the names and contact information for three referees (contacted only for shortlisted candidates).

For additional information, please contact Dr. Ali Salifu ([email protected]).

Requirements

  • PhD in Biomedical Engineering or a related field

  • Strong research background in drug delivery and tissue engineering

  • Record of high-quality research publications

  • Excellent teamwork, organizational, communication, and mentoring skills, including genuine interest in mentoring undergraduate researchers.

  • Candidates with experience in AI/machine learning approaches to drug delivery and tissue engineering are especially encouraged to apply.

  • Familiarity with decellularized scaffolds and omics techniques (transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics) is a plus.
