Payments Engineer

Job Description

We’re building a modern, scalable payments platform to support transactions across POS, e-commerce, mobile, kiosk, and call center channels. An existing engineer is focusing on dealership payments. You’ll join as the platform moves out of initial build and into deployments, bug fixes, and day-to-day operations, then into new feature work as it grows. The mix is about 30% maintenance and feature development and 70% greenfield. You’ll work with Product, Architecture, and multiple business units, and use AI coding tools such as Claude Code in day-to-day development.

Location: Lincolnshire, IL (hybrid, 2–3 days on-site, flexible)

Key Responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain payment services and APIs using C# and .NET / .NET Core

Work hands-on with credit card flows, payment processing, and gateways

Support deployments, production fixes, and day-to-day payment operations

Build new retail payment features as the platform expands

Partner with Product, Architecture, and business units to turn requirements into technical solutions

Participate in sprint planning, code reviews, and Agile delivery

Monitor production systems, troubleshoot issues, and support incident response

Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code, using AI coding tools such as Claude Code where they speed up the work

pay rate: $65-80/hour

Skills and Requirements

5+ years of software engineering experience

Strong proficiency in C# and .NET / .NET Core

Working knowledge of credit cards, payment processing, and gateways

Ability to explain how a payment moves from authorization through settlement

Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs

Experience with relational databases (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or similar)

Strong problem-solving and production debugging skills

Strong communication skills and comfort working across business units

Comfort using AI coding tools such as Claude Code

Local to the Chicago area and able to be in the Lincolnshire office 2–3 days a week Retail, POS, or multi-channel payments

Tokenization, 3DS, EMV, or PCI-DSS

Digital wallets or alternative payment methods

Messaging platforms (Kafka, RabbitMQ, Azure Service Bus)

Cloud experience (Azure, AWS, or GCP)

Agile / Scrum experience (Jira, Azure DevOps, etc.)
