Course Description
Ethics is a matter of respecting in thought and action those things that we value. How do we value the natural world and how do we shape our behavior in response to those values? How are we to understand the place of humans within nature?
In our real world of environmental questions and issues, various environmental philosophies such as the conservation movement, deep ecology, ecofeminism, and others weigh in on such diverse things as:
-
What attitudes and values drove the logging era in Michigan and how should we value forests today?
-
Are humans distinct from nature? Are humans a part of nature? Do humans transcend nature
-
What "good" are the Great Lakes? What should the goals of human management and interaction be?
-
Does the label `organic' mean anything, or should we be beyond organic? What effects on the natural world come from our agricultural practices?
-
What makes a species `invasive'? Should humans transfer genes across species boundaries?
-
Why should we care about wilderness? Is `the wild' a place, a construct, or a quality of existence?
-
Should nature, organisms, or natural features be extended personhood or rights?
-
What is the basis for environmental justice claims?
