College Assistant - The English Language Center
GENERAL DUTIES
-
Under supervision, performs miscellaneous clerical, administrative, research or other work related to the operation of a College or other unit where such work is required on a part-time basis or for a period of limited duration.
-
There is one Assignment Level for this position. All personnel perform related work. This specification describes typical assignments; related duties may be assigned as
needed.

Maximum tenure for any employee in this hourly position is 1040 hours per year.
-
Performs routine clerical work; may answer and attend to telephone calls; maintain records,
operate office machines (such as copier), sort and distribute mail, issue keys and identity cards,
act as messenger, and perform related tasks as required.

Types letters, memoranda, charts, and similar materials.
-
Acts as cashier.
-
Assists in statistical or research activities. May collect and compile data, code data for computer entry, perform data entry, and run computer reports.

Performs clerical library work, such as sorting and shelving books, performing data entry into library systems, or binding books and periodicals.
-
Assists in instructional programs, including tutoring and assisting students in areas such as reading and mathematics. May assist in speech and hearing therapy, provide musical accompaniment, and/or distribute and collect physical education equipment.

Enters and maintains departmental records such as inventory control records, rosters, directories, and schedules.

May operate computers, computer software, and other electronic equipment in performing assigned tasks.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens , LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia’s degree-seeking students are born outside the United States; they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages. Sixty percent are first-generation college students.
Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Upon graduation most students transfer to four-year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees. Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce. LaGuardia ranked fifth among U.S. community colleges in economic mobility – moving low-income students into the middle class and beyond – in studies by Stanford University (2017) and the Brookings Institution (2020). Reporting to the ESL Program Director, the College Assistant will assist with the following:

Respond to telephone, email, and in-person inquiries from students, faculty, and staff; clarify requests; provide follow-up communication when needed;

Screen visitors and phone calls and refer inquiries to appropriate staff or to other offices as appropriate; take and forward messages to staff;
-
Assist students with registration, scholarship applications, and refund processes;
-
Perform routine clerical work; maintain student files, make copies, and perform related tasks as required;
-
Contact students via email or phone to schedule them for placement tests;
-
Review and verify accuracy of student registration data and enter student data in the program registration system;
-
Assist instructors with daily needs, including printing pickups, copier issues, and requests for office supplies.

Assist staff with routine tasks and special projects.

Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must demonstrate sufficient skills to perform the duties of the assigned tasks.

COMPENSATION
$19.12 - $29.32
BENEFITS
CUNY offers a comprehensive benefits package to employees and eligible dependents based on job title and classification. Employees are also offered pension and Tax-Deferred Savings Plans. Part-time employees must meet a weekly or semester work hour criteria to be eligible for health benefits. Health benefits are also extended to retirees who meet the eligibility criteria.
