Full job description

The Cash Transfer Lab (CTL) at NYU is a multidisciplinary hub funded by the #StartSmall Initiative, focused on examining the impact of cash transfer policies on American families, communities, and economies. Using multiple methodologies, we collaborate with academic, industry, and policymaker partners to advance knowledge about the effects of interventions such as universal basic income on a myriad of policy-relevant outcomes including poverty, educational attainment, and health as well as gender and racial inequality.

CTL is seeking a Research Scientist to join our dynamic team. This position involves research and evaluation of existing programs relevant to ongoing projects in the CTL, as well as communications of evidence-based learnings to external stakeholders.

This position is based in New York and the selected candidate will be expected to work onsite as of their effective start date.

Responsibilities

The ideal candidates will:

  • Work directly with internal and external stakeholders to design and rigorously evaluate interventions

  • Translate findings from the social and behavioral sciences into concrete recommendations

  • Perform data analysis and interpretation

  • Distill findings into reports, policy memos, and academic publications

  • Represent the team by presenting at conferences and meetings

  • Collaborate on and contribute to internal team tasks and evaluations

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is 95,000- 125,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific funding source and the terms of the research grant contracts when extending an offer.

The position would come with a competitive salary, full benefits, and opportunities for career development, including teaching opportunities if those are desired. Appointment lengths are negotiable.

Expected start date and period of employment

We are looking to have the candidates start in January 2027. This position is expected to be for 1 year with the possibility of renewal, subject to available funding and job performance.

PhD in Sociology, Psychology, Public Policy, or a related field and at least 4 years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree with at least 6 years of relevant experience. Proven track record showing a unique set of technical and professional skills, disciplinary backgrounds, and experience.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated background in the following:

  • General knowledge of applied social and behavioral sciences and specialized knowledge of at least one domain of study within the social and behavioral sciences

  • Ability to think creatively about the application of insights from the social and behavioral sciences, and design interventions that are feasible

  • Expertise in one or more U.S. domestic policy sectors

  • Experience working with government programs, policies, operations, and/or data

  • Knowledge of evaluation design and analysis strategies

  • Experience conducting impact evaluations, including randomized evaluations, in field settings

  • Statistical competency in at least one data analytic programming language (e.g., R, Stata)

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills

  • The ability to juggle multiple competing priorities in a high-paced environment

  • Experience collaborating on multidisciplinary research teams

Applicants should submit, as one pdf, the following information:

  • A brief cover letter, explaining your interest, background with evaluation research, and fit for the position;

  • an up-to-date resume

Review of applications will begin as soon as possible and will continue until the position is filled. Expected start date is January 4th, 2027. This position is for one year, with an opportunity to renew subject to performance and availability of funds.

We welcome applications from international candidates; however, please note that NYU is not an E-Verify employer and therefore unable to support STEM OPT extensions.

Candidates will be required to present eligibility to work in the United States.
