Summary
The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), Museum Learning and Programs (MLP).The NMAI is committed to advancing knowledge and understanding of the Native cultures of the Western Hemisphere, past, present and future, through partnership with Native people and others. Duties
The Public Programs Assistant is responsible for assisting and implementing public programs and products related to the interests of the NMAI and providing program administrative support. In this position, you will: Develop and implement plans of action to bring performers, speakers, demonstrators, and experts to Washington, DC and New York. Develop budget, track budget, and assure that all financial and administrative matters are handled in a timely way. Undertake internal administrative requirements related to programs including initial contracting for payments, organizing travel and lodging for participants, ensuring supplies are in place for programs; submit requests for building management services, guard services, photographic and publications services, audio visual, publicity and other similar logistical arrangements. Develop schedule of ongoing and future events for inclusion in brochures, flyers, press releases, web announcements, advertisements, internal and external schedules and calendars. From written and verbal sources, gather accurate and appropriate information and images for use in printed calendars and on the web. Work directly with performers, speakers, cultural demonstrators, etc., to arrange their programs, which may include making travel, lodging, and other logistical arrangements, technical needs, and requirements for performance and presentation and completing payment paperwork. Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as developing Native-themed public programs in a museum setting which includes Native music, dance, theater, storytelling, author events, or related demonstrations. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. Or Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree OR 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL. Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above. Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree. This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points, but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-veterans within each quality category. The Hiring Manager may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no veteran in that category is passed over to select a non-veteran in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Veterans who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher. How You Will Be Evaluated
Applicants for this position may be evaluated in multiple stages. Knowledge of administrative regulations, processes, and procedures to support program administration initiatives.
