Job Summary:

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS’ expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.

We have an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Engineer (EE) to join our Aerospace Technologies team in Huntsville, AL. We are looking for someone with drive, talent, and experience in Mixed-Signal Design for avionics applications who also thrives in a fast-paced, Research and Development (R&D) environment. The successful candidate will report to an Electrical Engineering Manager and, alongside high-caliber staff, will be engaged in the engineering support and new development of custom flights computers, power systems, telemetry instrumentation systems, and harnessing for in-house guided missile and projectile applications, and a variety of other technologies in the expanding product portfolio of GA-EMS.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with GA-EMS Engineering staff and chief engineers in the concept development and prototype design, integration, and test of analog and digital electronics. These encompass high-power motor drives, power conditioning systems, pulsed power systems, battery systems, high energy laser systems, space systems, advanced sensors, communications, target tracking, and/or instrumentation.

  • Working knowledge of circuit, flight/test harness design, including familiarity with and the creation of electrical drawings, wire selection, shielding, military connectors, circuit theory, signal processing, and embedded systems.

  • Demonstrate prior experience in the improvement of legacy systems and development of new systems.

  • Generate electrical architecture solutions for new project needs, perform electrical engineering analyses for systems and circuits, schematic design, PCB design, firmware design, test procedure creation, failure analysis, communicate results to engineering and program management staff, give technical presentations, and manage technical effort schedules.

  • Grasp, understand, correlate, and apply concepts in electrical engineering to pieces in a complex system.

  • Plan and execute technical efforts quickly and strategically with general directions and minimal supervision.

  • May represent the organization as the prime technical contact on projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; nine or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, seven or more years of experience with a masters degree, or four or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.

  • Required Experience: Analog and digital schematic design utilizing Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), Multi-Processor System-on-Chip (MPSoC), Microcontrollers, and Microprocessors; wiring harness development for flight and test cables; analysis, design, and implementation of hardware systems.

  • Desirable Experience : Avionics design for aerospace defense applications; guiding a design from start (requirements) to finish (acceptance testing) and possibly into production; familiarity with formal technical review processes (at a minimum, SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR); familiarity with IPC and J-STD-001 standards; firmware and/or PCB design; WOSA compliance.

  • Desired Skills (ranked high to low): Experience with Altium Schematic/PCB Design Software or similar ECAD tool, SPICE circuit simulation tools, VHDL, Xilinx Vivado Design Suite, HyperLynx Signal/Power Integrity tools, ANSYS Signal Integrity tools, Solidworks Electrical.

  • Demonstrates detailed and extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice as well as project and/or program leadership including organizing, planning, scheduling, and coordinating workloads to meet established project deadlines or milestones.

  • Must possess the ability to contribute to the development of new concepts and principles; resolve unusually complex technical problems; serve as spokesperson on projects and/or programs; and be a technical expert in one or more areas of engineering.

  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required enabling an effective leadership interface with other departments, all levels of management, professional and support staff, customers, potential customers, and government representatives.

  • Customer-focused and able to formulate plans based on the development of innovative new designs in resolving advanced technical engineering problems.

  • Must be able to work on a self-initiated basis or in a team environment and able to work extended hours and travel as required.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance is required.
