Full job description

Are you ready to build America’s energy future? Form Energy is an American manufacturing and energy technology company. We’re revolutionizing energy storage with cost-effective, multi-day technology designed to keep the electric grid secure and reliable, even during extended periods of stress. By strengthening the electric system and reimagining what’s possible, we’re giving clean energy a whole new form!

In recent years, Form Energy has earned a number of accolades, including being named by TIME as a “Best Invention”, MIT Technology Review as a “Top Climate Tech Company To Watch”, and Fast Company as “One of the Next Big Things In Tech”. We are making rapid progress on our mission of delivering energy storage for a better world, and our team is growing just as rapidly to meet demand. We have signed contracts with leading electric utilities across the United States and production of our iron-air batteries is underway at our first high-volume manufacturing facility in West Virginia.

Working for Form Energy is more than just a job, it’s a chance to be part of something extraordinary. And now - right as we significantly scale up battery manufacturing - might be the most exciting moment in the company’s history to join. We are assembling a team of highly talented and driven individuals across the country. Driven by our core values of humanity, excellence, and creativity, our team is determined to deliver on our mission and transform the energy landscape for the better.

Feeling energized to make a meaningful impact on the world? Then keep reading - you’ve come to the right place.

Role Description The Electrode Engineering teams within the Core Technology group at Form Energy are multidisciplinary and focused on delivering qualified battery anode and cathode designs that meet operational performance targets, at cost and with high reliability, from controlled processes on high-volume manufacturing lines for Form Energy's utility-scale multi-day energy storage system.

Form Energy is hiring a mechanical engineering manager to lead a team executing the mechanical design of our battery electrodes. You will manage and grow a team of mechanical engineers, playing a key role in establishing best practices and setting a high bar for excellence. As part of our Electrode Mechanical Design team, you will work closely with Electrode & Cell Performance, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain teams to create scalable designs composed of low-cost metal and plastic components, housing Form Energy’s proprietary active materials. We’re looking for an empathetic manager who wants to grow a team, drive product development, and lead hands-on design and prototyping work. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and be part of the growth of a fast-moving company with breakthrough technology and an incredible mission!

Relocation assistance is available.

What you'll do:

  • Lead the design of a full electrode assembly integral to the battery

  • Create white-page designs that will be the foundation of Form Energy’s future products, while also leading sustaining engineering on shipping electrodes

  • Perform hands-on prototyping of designs and collaborate with broader teams to build integrated prototypes

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to optimize performance, DFM, DFA, cost, reliability

  • Demonstrate design functionality through analysis (e.g. FEA, CFD) and driving verification testing of your team’s design work

  • Work with vendors, supply chain partners, manufacturing engineers, and technical operations to transition designs from the prototype stage to high volume production

  • Mentor and manage multiple engineers working on components of the electrode assembly

What you'll bring:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Bachelor's with 10+ years, or Master's with 8+ years industry experience in mechanical design

  • Demonstrated experience leading, managing, and mentoring direct reports

  • Well-developed experience designing mechanical components and assemblies composed of low-cost metal and plastic for high-volume manufacture in a hardware product development company

  • Experience implementing design for manufacturing & assembly (DFMA) principles

  • Strong technical communication skills, especially with external parties and across internal functional teams

  • Experience with the design and verification of air or liquid seals is a plus

  • A growth mindset and bias for action: you treat ambiguity and roadblocks as opportunities to drive progress, not reasons to wait for direction, and you bring real urgency to creating impact
