AFO is looking for an Mechanical Engineer to work in Honolulu, HI. To join our team of outstanding professionals, apply today!

The Mechanical Engineer provides technical engineering support for post-Hurricane Lowell damage assessment, stabilization, repair, and restoration of facility mechanical systems across Kauaʻi. The position evaluates damage, develops repair recommendations, reviews contractor work, and supports safe and timely restoration of mission-critical facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field assessments of hurricane damage to HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, pumps, mechanical equipment, and related facility systems.

  • Evaluate mechanical system conditions and develop repair, replacement, and restoration recommendations.

  • Support emergency stabilization, temporary systems, and mission-critical facility restoration.

  • Review mechanical drawings, specifications, equipment selections, contractor submittals, and repair approaches.

  • Provide field engineering support and resolve mechanical construction issues.

  • Inspect contractor installations and verify compliance with approved designs, specifications, codes, and Government requirements.

  • Coordinate with Construction Managers, Civil/Electrical Engineers, SSHO, QC, Logistics, contractors, and Government representatives.

  • Support development and validation of repair scopes, quantities, cost estimates, and schedules.

  • Document field conditions, deficiencies, repair progress, and remaining requirements.

  • Support transition from emergency repairs to permanent mechanical restoration.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.

  • 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience, preferably involving facilities, infrastructure, or construction.

  • Experience with HVAC, plumbing, mechanical equipment, and facility systems.

  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, equipment schedules, and technical submittals.

  • Strong field assessment, problem-solving, technical writing, and communication skills.
