Description & Requirements

BloombergNEF (BNEF) is seeking a highly talented, motivated individual to serve as North America Team Leader (NA TL), a senior role leading our US and Canada research efforts based out of New York City. The appropriate candidate will have a deep interest in virtually every facet of North American energy, including power markets, renewables, carbon markets, demand response, gas production/distribution, large-scale data centers, industrial energy use and transportation. The candidate will have significant (10 years+) experience in at least one of these areas.

The NA TL will be charged with implementing BNEF’s overall research strategy for the US and Canada by working across multiple teams to coordinate output. They will appreciate deep dives into the wide array of federal, regional, state and occasionally even local energy policies critical to the region’s energy sector. The best candidate will relish connecting dots between various market segments and relevant policies to draw conclusions about the market’s overall direction. They will embrace the chance to build and motivate teams by fostering the growth of analysts to their maximum potential.

The NA TL will have direct oversight of a small team of analysts focused specifically on US and Canadian markets and regulatory developments broadly. They will also have “dotted-line” oversight of a larger group of analysts from BNEF teams focused on renewables, energy storage, power markets. They will serve as a leading spokesperson for BNEF in North America, regularly presenting the group’s research at conferences and in media appearances.

BNEF is a strategic research provider covering global commodity markets and the ground-breaking technologies driving the transition to a low-carbon economy. We help our clients gain a clear perspective on the trends in technology, finance, policy and economics that are driving transformation across the energy value chain. Our expert coverage assesses pathways for the power, transport, industry, buildings and agriculture sectors to adapt to the energy transition. We help commodity trading, corporate strategy, finance and policy professionals navigate change and generate opportunities.

BNEF Team Ethos: To succeed at BNEF we need people who can work in an independent manner and show initiative to develop their own viewpoints, yet be collaborative with colleagues. We don't rely on the status quo; we look for innovative yet pragmatic thinking that turns big ideas into real insights and impact. Working at BNEF sometimes feels chaotic; we need teams that are both dynamic and structured to generate the outstanding perspectives our clients really value. Our teams are diverse, creative, focused, and fun!

We'll trust you to:

  • Develop and deliver BNEF’s North America research strategy to meet the needs of a diverse set of clients by working in close collaboration with the BNEF Commercial team as well as TLs and directors from other parts of the business.

  • Manage directly a team of analysts focused on tracking overall US policy and market developments. This will include overseeing their research agendas, editing their research output to ensure it meets BNEF’s high editorial standards and mentoring them on external/client appearances.

  • Manage indirectly (via “dotted-line” reporting) a larger group of North America analysts tasked with tracking the renewables, energy storage, carbon, power, gas, electric vehicle and other sectors in North America.

  • Work closely with product and data teams to integrate research, tools and data on the terminal and BNEF web platforms, enabling a best-in-class workflow solution for clients.

  • Identify key data sets relevant to North American energy development and, if needed, assist with the onboarding and management of those data sets.

  • Enable close collaboration across BNEF groups to deliver integrated, cross-commodity, cross-sector research. Coordinate major regional publications and applied research projects, delivering them on time and within scope

  • Cultivate and leverage a broad professional network of influential leaders within the energy space

  • Be a sought after, key voice in the industry for business leaders, the media, policy makers, and others

  • Write and communicate insightful, important BNEF research that informs clients worldwide while promoting and affirming the BNEF brand both within and beyond the industry

  • Actively support business development through high-impact client engagements and ensure client questions/requests are addressed in a timely manner

  • Manage, mentor, and grow a set of talented team leaders and high-performing analysts who emulate the ‘BNEF Ethos’, while maintaining team camaraderie and motivation in the workplace

  • Collaborate with a high degree of integrity with colleagues and clients from diverse cultures and countries

You'll need to have:

  • 10+ years of experience of the energy industry overall, with specific knowledge of the North American markets, including key federal policies, power market structures, and industry players

  • Ability to think critically and develop thoughtful opinions by cutting through the noise of data, extracting key patterns, applying skepticism to the claims of industry participants and asking insightful questions

  • Demonstrated ability to “connect the dots” between diverse research areas, including policy, economics, finance, markets and technology. This includes getting up to speed with new ideas and topics and integrating them into our thinking quickly and pragmatically

  • Substantial experience articulating ideas in writing and verbally to a range of audiences, including senior business executives, industry experts and key policy makers

  • An entrepreneurial spirit with the keen ability to identify new business opportunities and exploit them

  • Excellent client-facing skills and enthusiasm to represent the product both internally and externally

  • Creative and flexible approach to people and project management, with a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion

  • Time management skills and confidence in balancing work on multiple projects at once

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Finance, Engineering, Science, Environment, Mathematics, Humanities or other relevant subjects

  • Prior experience in mentorship, management of a team and development of others

  • Comfort in working with large datasets and models (in excel, python and SQL), and a keenness to continuously adapt analyst workflows with advancements in AI
