A career in IBM's HCPT Cloud Platform Engineering (CPE) team provides the rare opportunity to help define the next generation of cloud platform scaling. We are the engineering organization that runs, scales, and modernizes the core platform underneath HashiCorp Terraform Cloud at enterprise scale. You will partner with innovative product squads and leading SREs to design the technical foundations needed to build a highly available, self-healing, and secure cloud economy.

Your role and responsibilities

As a Software Developer specializing in Cloud, you will work in an agile, collaborative environment across various Cloud platforms, leveraging expertise in multi-cloud environments, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), and Platform as a Service (PaaS). You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and deliver scalable and secure cloud-based solutions.

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Design and Develop Cloud Automations Solutions: Develop scripts, programs, and automated shared libraries for automating software development, container verification, and production deployments, focusing on increasing efficiency and velocity.

  • Build Automated Systems: Create and maintain automated Concourse and GitHub Actions pipeline configurations, ensuring seamless integration with existing Terraform-based systems and processes.

  • Improve Automation Strategies (Automation 2.0): Continuously assess and refine platform automation strategies—building self-healing scripts and tools in Go and Python—to optimize business outcomes, improve team resiliency, and reduce on-call toil.

  • Deliver End-to-End Experiences: Care equally about business outcomes and technical solutions, focusing on delivering exceptional, friction-free CI/CD and deployment experiences for product squads.

  • Drive Business Outcomes: Participate in the weekly CPE on-call rotation, resolve automated alerts within 15 minutes, maintain updated runbooks, and ensure overall platform reliability (uptime ≥ 99.95%).

Required technical and professional expertise

  • Deep Expertise in Automation Development: 3+ years of proven experience in designing and building systems and tools that automate repetitive software development, testing, and deploymen tasks.

  • Experience with Scripting and Programming: Highly skilled in developing custom scripts and frameworks in Go (golang) or Python, with solid expertise in modern API and webhook integrations.

  • Strategic Automation Planning (CI/CD): Practical experience in creating automated delivery solutions based on business requirements, with the ability to assess and optimize Concourse or GitHub Actions pipelines.

  • Technical Solution Implementation: Proven ability to care equally about business outcomes and technical solutions, with a focus on delivering robust self-healing and monitoring configurations.

  • Business Outcome Optimization: Deep understanding of how automation drives overall platform quality and developer velocity, with experience in telemetry, logging, and performance monitoring.

Preferred technical and professional experience

  • Familiarity with Kata: Experience with Kata, including its application in containerized environments and potential integration with other technologies like Kubernetes.

  • Knowledge of Operators: Understanding of Operators and their role in automating tasks, as well as experience working with them in a cloud-based setting.

  • SDN and Network Resiliency: Experience with Software Defined Networks (SDN) and Network Resiliency concepts, including their implementation in cloud environments.

  • Advanced Scripting & Infrastructure Knowledge: Experience writing clean, modular infrastructure-as-code modules utilizing HashiCorp Terraform.

  • Technical Solution Vision (Kubernetes): Familiarity with operating and deploying workloads into container orchestration clusters (AWS EKS, Nomad, or ECS).

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Experience working with multiple stakeholders (including adjacent Product Engineering and Atlas squads) to refine automation pipelines and maintain clear boundaries.
