Job Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Workers’ Compensation Administrator to join our Human Resources team in Poway, CA.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the oversite of the third-party administrators’ handling of occupational claims.

  • Works closely with the Environmental, Health and safety team on initial injuries, employee assistance, medical care direction, data input into the GEMS reporting system, and assist in determining first aid injuries versus reportable claims.

  • Reviews accident investigation reports to verify facts and conducts appropriate follow-up with management; this may require contact with injured workers, supervisors, or witnesses to verify facts of injuries.

  • Interprets Labor Code regulations and the appropriate application for occupational injuries.

  • Assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of initiatives, strategies, training, and programs to control the costs of the company’s workers’ compensation program.

  • Knowledge of California Labor Code for workers’ compensation and related requirements of workers’ compensation commissions in states where the company operates.

  • Able to prepare statistical loss analysis reports and prepare recommendations to management to improve controls and systems to reduce exposure to financial losses due to claims of injuries.

  • Ensures cost effective management of the workers’ compensation program by providing oversight and direction; ensures that claims are handled expeditiously, fairly, and cost effectively.

  • Provides claims administrative oversight and direction to claims administrators, claims examiners, and attorneys handling workers’ compensation claims.

  • Provides guidance to Human Resource business partners, supervisors and administrative assistants to ensure accurate and timely reporting of all work-related injuries.

  • Monitors plans of action to ensure they meet the company’s goals and objectives.

  • Frequently collaborates with the Human Resource Leave Manager; act as liaison between employee and Claims Administrator.

  • Monitors employees working in modified duty capacity.

  • Coordinates early return to work with program staff, claims administrator, and physicians as necessary.

  • Maintains a comprehensive database of the current open claims, plans of action, and next expected action (Excel Spreadsheet – Reporting monthly).

  • Oversees the settlement requests for appropriateness and cost effectiveness.

  • Monitors performance of third-party administrator, service providers and vendors to ensure compliance.

  • Advises manager of red flag claims, reporting issues, and claim management issues.

  • Assists manager in analyzing workers’ compensation injuries and developing cost reduction action plans and early return to work strategies.

  • Monitors loss run data integrity through monthly review of loss runs, obtains assistance from account manager, safety team and Human Resources business partners to verify location/injury information.

  • Attends and participates in claim reviews.

  • Assesses the training needs at the program related to injury reporting, claims administration, and increasing knowledge. Develop and present training as needed.

  • Provides HRIS and payroll with work status and workers’ compensation benefit information for payroll integration.

  • Provides administrative assistance to Leave Administration team and manager as needed.

  • Work closely with Leave Specialists to review leave and disability cases and or concurrent claims.

  • Provides direction to support staff and less experienced professional staff.

  • Conduct annual OSHA reporting requirements

  • Maintain the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.

  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a Bachelors degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Human Resources, Organizational Development or a related discipline and six or more years of progressive professional experience in a Human Resources department. May substitute a certificate in human resources from a recognized organization and/or equivalent experience in lieu of education.

  • Prefer a certificate in Human Resources, IEA, WCCA or CPDM from a recognized organization and/or equivalent experience in lieu of education.

  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of senior level experience in California examining workers’ compensation claims for an employer, insurance carrier, claims administrator, or self-insured organization.

  • Knowledge of California Labor Code for workers’ compensation and related requirements.

  • Able to prepare statistical loss analysis reports and prepare recommendations to management to improve controls and systems to reduce exposure to financial losses due to claims of injuries.

  • Able to balance multiple priorities.

  • Must have a comprehensive understanding of workers’ compensation principles, theories and concepts and a complete and thorough knowledge of claim handling, litigation, reserve practices, resolution, techniques, and standards of complex claims.

  • Must be customer focused and possess: (1) the ability to identify issues and develop solutions to a variety of problems of diverse scope and complexity; (2) excellent analytical, verbal and written communication skills to accurately document, report, and present findings to a variety of audiences including management and external parties: (3) excellent interpersonal skills to influence and guide all levels of employees, including managers and external parties; (4) the ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information; (5) the ability to initiate, plan, and manage projects.

  • Ability to work in a team environment is essential.

  • Willingness to further self-education in Human Resources and Leave and Disability fields.

  • Knowledge of OSHA reporting and requirements

  • Knowledge of employment law regarding terminations, benefits, COBRA, ADA, and how these areas may impact individual workers’ compensation cases.

  • This position requires regular on-site presence to support operational needs.
