Full job description

Are you interested in an Intern opportunity with Philips? We welcome individuals who are currently pursuing an undergraduate (BS) and/or graduate (MS) degree to participate in 3 month paid Intern opportunities at our site in San Diego, CA. Through this role you will gain meaningful, hands-on experience working for a HealthTech company.

Joining Philips IP Intern, you will become part of an international community of IP professionals with wide-ranging technical backgrounds and IP experience, gained both inside and outside Philips. The Philips Intellectual Property & Standards (IP&S) team offers you excellent opportunities for learning and professional networking to increase your knowledge of intellectual property matters and to continue your professional development. You will work closely with colleagues in the business as part of a team-based approach to supporting the IP needs of Philips.

Your role:

  • Define the characteristics of a healthy patent portfolio and assess the optimal distribution of patents supporting current products, technologies in development, and future opportunities.

  • Evaluate how patent portfolio strategies vary across consumer and regulated healthcare markets, including differences in product development and launch timelines.

  • Explore how exclusive and defensive IP value and business models influence patent portfolio structure, including strategic patents not intended for use in company products.

  • Review relevant literature, summarize findings, and develop guidelines for a healthy, cost-efficient patent portfolio in relation to sales, EBITA, portfolio size, and near- and long-term priorities.

  • Identify proof points to validate the guidelines, such as competitor patent-marking data, and present the findings in a concise report with mentoring from IP Counsel and oversight from the Head of IP.

You’re the right fit if:

  • You are an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in technology.

  • You have basic knowledge of IP.

  • You demonstrate confidence, critical thinking, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • You bring a strong professional drive.

  • You possess excellent analytical and intellectual capabilities.

  • You have excellent relationship-building, teamwork, and collaboration skills.

  • You communicate effectively at all levels, both internally and externally.

  • You must be able to successfully perform the following minimum Physical, Cognitive and Environmental job requirements with or without accommodation for this position.
