Operations Manager
Fremont, California
CertainTeed Roofing Products Group is seeking an Operations Manager to lead production, maintenance, facilities, and repair activities at its unionized Fremont manufacturing facility. This senior site leadership role is responsible for delivering safe, reliable, efficient, and profitable operations while meeting customer commitments and achieving safety, quality, delivery, cost, and service objectives.
The Operations Manager will establish operating priorities, strengthen equipment reliability, manage staffing and capacity, control departmental budgets, and advance continuous-improvement initiatives. This position develops front-line leaders, supports positive labor relations, and partners closely with the Plant Manager and cross-functional teams to align daily execution with the plant’s operating plan, capital priorities, and long-term strategy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Lead production, maintenance, facilities, and repair activities to achieve plant objectives, the annual profit plan, monthly forecasts, and customer requirements.

Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with environmental, health, safety, quality, and operating policies and procedures.

Improve operational efficiency across production lines, maintenance, and facilities through the effective use of people, equipment, materials, and available capacity.

Monitor safety, quality, production schedules, equipment reliability, operating costs, staffing, and customer delivery performance; communicate risks, progress, and opportunities to the Plant Manager.

Evaluate production-load changes and adjust labor, equipment, schedules, and other resources to meet changing business requirements.

Review and strengthen operating practices to improve product quality, equipment performance, labor productivity, housekeeping, 5S, cost control, and on-time shipment performance.

Lead, coach, and develop manufacturing leaders and supervisors while supporting consistent accountability, employee engagement, morale, discipline, and positive labor relations.

Partner with engineering, quality, safety, logistics, finance, purchasing, human resources, and regional support teams on operational issues, staffing, inventory, maintenance, and capital priorities.

Champion World Class Manufacturing, Lean, Six Sigma, TPM, standardized work, statistical process control, and other continuous-improvement methods.

Perform other duties as assigned and provide flexible support for a continuous operation, including occasional off-shift, weekend, shutdown, or emergency coverage.
Position Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering is required . A master’s degree in Business Administration, Engineering, Operations, or a related field is preferred.

Experience: 6–8 years of manufacturing experience in a management capacity is required , with demonstrated experience leading manufacturing operations and people.

Three or more years of people-leadership experience in a unionized, continuous-process, or heavy manufacturing environment is preferred, with exposure to safety, reliability, cost, quality, labor relations, and continuous improvement.

Strong working knowledge of manufacturing processes, product structures, quality standards, and modern manufacturing technologies and techniques is required.

Working knowledge of TPM, autonomous and professional maintenance, early equipment management, Statistical Process Control (SPC), 5S, standardized work, Lean principles, and Six Sigma methodologies is required.

Demonstrated human-relations and leadership skills, including the ability to effectively engage the skills and talents of employees to improve business performance, are required.

Strong written and verbal communication skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite are required.

Lean, Six Sigma, World Class Manufacturing (WCM), or an equivalent continuous-improvement certification is preferred and may be held at hire or obtained through a company development plan.

Ability to provide schedule flexibility in support of a continuous manufacturing operation, including occasional off-shift, weekend, shutdown, and emergency coverage . The position may require up to 10% business travel for regional meetings, training, supplier or sister-plant visits, and other business needs.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements: The role requires working within an active manufacturing environment and includes standing and walking for sustained periods, sitting, climbing/balancing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and use of hands and fingers. The position may involve exposure to heat, cold, wet or humid conditions, dust, fumes, chemicals, moving equipment, noise, hazardous materials, and vibration. Required personal protective equipment and safety clothing must be worn in designated plant areas.

We believe in the importance of pay transparency in what we offer potential candidates. Provided is the national pay range for this position, which is $111,000 to -$177,000 per year. However, the base pay offered may vary depending on geographic region, internal equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, among other factors.-
In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for an annual bonus. The targeted bonus amount is 15% of base salary based on company and individual performance measures. The Total Target Cash range (base pay and annual bonus) for this position is $127,600 to $203,500. Bonus payments are part of variable compensation and, by nature, can vary based on company and individual performance and are not a guarantee.
