Job Description

The team will underwrite new prospect relationships with companies generating $50 million to $250 million in annual revenue, giving Middle Market Relationship Managers a dedicated credit partner and improving speed to market for prospects.

The Senior Portfolio Manager will build and lead this new team of experienced portfolio managers and developing early-career talent. This is a hands-on leadership role for an experienced Middle Market credit professional who can help win new client relationships while maintaining strong credit quality. The role may hold the highest lending authority on the team and is responsible for sound and timely credit decisions, credit quality, and compliance with credit policy and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership

  • Build and lead the new team, including intake, workflow, and operating rhythm.

  • Recruit, develop, and coach a team of experienced portfolio managers and early-career talent.

New Client Underwriting

  • Lead the credit assessment of new prospect opportunities from initial deal assessment through credit approval, documentation, and closing.

  • Review and approve credit requests within delegated lending authority and escalate as appropriate.

  • Develop well-supported, competitive credit structures, including covenants, collateral, and relationship return considerations, that balance growth with sound risk management.

  • Ensure accurate risk ratings and appropriate leveraged lending assessments, and manage within applicable hold and risk limits.

Business Partnership

  • Partner with Middle Market Relationship Managers on prospect calls and provide early, clear credit feedback so the team focuses on opportunities that fit the bank’s risk appetite.

  • Coordinate with industry-focused portfolio management teams on opportunities aligned with their coverage, and ensure a smooth handoff of new relationships for ongoing portfolio management.

  • Manage the team’s pipeline and drive timely turnaround on prospect opportunities.

Credit Quality, Compliance & Insight

  • Ensure credit processes are adequate, including timely credit requests, past due management, credit quality goals, and compliance.

  • Track pipeline, approval, win/loss, and decline outcomes, and share market feedback with ICG Credit leadership and Credit Risk Management to inform credit policy, process improvements, and Middle Market strategy.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience

  • 10 or more years of banking experience

  • Five or more years of management experience

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • Significant Middle Market commercial lending and underwriting experience, including new client acquisition

  • Proven track record of structuring and closing competitive credit transactions for middle market companies

  • Advanced knowledge of commercial lending policy, all applicable laws and regulations, credit quality standards, and company and business line policies and procedures

  • Advanced knowledge of credit products

  • Working knowledge of risk rating methodologies, leveraged lending guidance, and loan origination systems such as nCino

  • Well-developed leadership abilities and strategic management skills, including experience building teams and developing early-career talent

  • Strong client-facing skills and the ability to build trusted partnerships with Relationship Managers

  • Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills, with sound judgment under tight timelines

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Considerable tact and diplomacy skills, with the ability to work effectively across business lines, credit teams, and Credit Risk Management
